Notes for Contributors

Interested researchers or scholars on visit to Australia who wish to contribute to the Lao Studies Society's seminars or conference, please write to the Secretary enclosing abstract of your proposed presentation or written contributions. Seminar papers and conference proceedings shall be published in the Society's annual Lao Studies Review, along with other submitted original materials. The Review is published when sufficient contributions are on hands.

Format of Articles:

Focus: contributions shall be well documented or based on field/literature research, and shall relate to any aspects of Laos (geography, geology, flora, fauna. history, politics, etc) and its people (cultures, economies, religions, languages, etc).

Style: major articles submitted for publication shall comply with accepted practices relating to style and organisation of scientific papers found in learned publications. References shall consist of name of author with year of publication and page number in brackets included the body of the article, followed by a full listing of references at the end of the article. Please refrain from having footnotes.

Publication Policy:

Each article shall be certified by the author(s) that it is an original work, has not been copyrighted or submitted for publication elsewhere.

Where the work presented is the result of field support by another organisation, clearance for publication from the sponsoring organisation where necessary shall be the responsibility of the author(s) but the Lao Studies Society shall preferably be assigned copyright in the published material.

Where there is more than one author each author shall sign the letter of transmittal, and make the same certification and agreement regarding copyright. Each paper submitted shall be reviewed by the editor, guest editor or by the editorial subcommittee.

If the material submitted is found to satisfy the requirements of the Society, it shall be evaluated for accuracy, objectivity, relevance and originality by at least two referees. Revision may be requested based on the referees' comments.

Every effort will be made by the Society to notify authors promptly to inform them whether materials submitted are accepted and the expected date of publication. Where a paper is not used for the annual Lao Studies Review, it may be published as an Occasional Paper of the Society, with the consent of its author(s).

Language used:

English, Lao and French. Whatever language used in the main article, an abstract shall be made, if possible, in Lao or English.

Materials for Publication:

  1. Core articles: concise articles (4-12 printed pages) reporting on results of original research or on research in progress on educational, economic, linguistic, cultural, historical, current affairs or any other topics relevant to Laos. Longer papers may be accepted if space permit.

  2. Short pieces: proverbs, poems, editorial comments, letters from readers (with full name and address of writer but address will not be published).

1-2 page comments on new ideas, work in progress or summaries of relevant postgraduate theses presented in Australia and other countries.

politically sensitive articles may need to be approved by the Editorial Subcommittee, and the Management Committee is to be consulted if sensitive issues are covered. As a learned non-profit organisation, the Society does not pay for contributions but shall supply reprints for authors published in its annual Review.
