Remains returned from Vietnam, Laos WASHINGTON, Oct. 30 (UPI) -- U.S. teams working with Vietnamese and Laotian authorities have recovered the remains of five American servicemen previously listed as missing in action. Officials today identified the men, all Air Force personnel, as Maj. Thomas R. Allen of Woodward, Okla.; Capt. Ronald L. Packard of Canon City, Colo.; Maj. John C. Clark of Brownfield, Texas; Capt. Patrick K. Harrold of Fort Leavenworth, Kan.; and Maj. Bobby G. Huggins of Montgomery, Ala. The Pentagon said Allen and Packard were flying a night armed reconnaissance mission over North Vietnam on July 31, 1967, when they were apparently shot down while attacking a suspected enemy truck. On Dec. 5, 1969, Clark and Harrold were flying a night strike mission over Laos. Their F-4E fighter jet crashed after going into a steeper- than-normal attack dive from which pilots were unable to recover. Huggins and a crew member were flying a night mission, photographing Vietnamese positions, when their low-flying plane apparently crashed on June 4, 1970. Three separate missions, conducted with the assistance of Laos and Vietnam, recovered the remains following search-and-excavation operations. The remains were all subsequently identified through DNA testing With the five servicemen's identification, 2,104 Americans remain unaccounted for from the Vietnam War.
