The Bangkok Post, 25 June 1997 ENERGY Egat to buy Laotian power 30-year supply starts in 1999 The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (Egat) yesterday signed an agreement with Houay Ho Power Co to purchase 126 megawatts of electricity from Houay Ho's plant in southern Laos. The total generating capacity of the Houay Ho hydropower plant is 150 megawatts, according to Viroj Nopkhun, Egat's deputy governor for policy and planning. The 30-year contract sets the price for the power at 4.22 US cents per kilowatt hour, Mr Viroj said. Deliveries will begin on September 1, 1999. The partners in the five-billion-baht project are Daewoo (Korea) Co, which holds 60% equity, Loxley Plc of Thailand (20%), and the Electricity Authority of Laos (20%). Yesterday's agreement was the second that Egat has made with the Laotian government. It signed a power-purchase agreement for the Nam Thuen Hinbun hydroelectric project on June 19. Thailand has signed a memorandum with the Laotian government to buy 3,000 megawatts of electricity by 2006. Consumption in Thailand is now about 13,000 Mw.
