Breif History of Ararat

Ararat

The Rural City of Ararat has seen many changes in its long history of 150 years by the year 2007. First the squatters came in the 1830s and later the farmers in the 1860s with the Land Sales.

The gold rushes of the 1850s brought thousands of people seeking their fortune in this district. It was the traders who served the goldfields who became the nucleus of the first municipal district, which was proclaimed in September 1858, then a Borough in 1862.

In the Ararat Shire the farmers and graziers were prosperous with growing fine wool, cropping, and viticulture.

The 6th April 1875 was a great day when the railway reached Ararat and built up, over the years, to a workforce of over 500, only to see it lost to road transport in these later years.

Today the viticulture industry surrounds the city and tourism is an important source of employment as Ararat is in the centre of many scenic attractions. Langi Morgala Museum is but one of our museums to visit in Ararat.

Manufacturing Industry is covered with Gasons, A.M.E. and other firms in the Industrial Estate.

The Ararat Rural City was formed when the Ararat Shire Council and the Ararat City Council were amalgamated in October 1994.
