Ararat and District Historical Society

Ararat and District Historical Society was formed at a meeting held on 17 August 1962. At a meeting on 5 October 1962 a constitution was adopted and R. Allan Blachford was elected first President.

The purpose of the Society was to be:

* The study of any matter of general historical interest in particular relating to the history of Ararat and district

* The collection, indexing and preservation of material recording the history of Ararat and district

* To identify and mark places of historical interest in the city, shire and surrounding district

* To secure a place of safekeeping for all property entrusted to the Society and to keep in view the aim of establishing a Historical Museum in Ararat

The council subsequently bought a building, which had formerly been a wheat and wool store, and later used by the army authorities to manufacture parachutes and store emergency canned food during the Second World War. The foundation stone of this building was laid on 5 December 1873. The building has a National Trust heritage C classification. Many working bees were held to prepare the building for its new role as a museum.

The council at that time held two collections. The first was a collection of aboriginal Artefacts donated by the family of the late Mr L.J. Mooney in 1956. The other collection, also of aboriginal Artefacts, was donated by Mr H.C. Best. These were transferred to the museum. Mr Stan Kelly painted four murals for the museum, two of the discovery of gold at Cathcart and Mt. William and two of aboriginal camps. The historical society purchased a K Class Steam Locomotive.

The museum was opened by His Excellency, Sir Rohan Delacombe, Governor of Victoria on 23 October 1970. The museum was named Morgala an aboriginal word for yesterday. The aboriginal word Langi meaning home was added later. So the museum is appropriately named Home of Yesterday.

Since that time the collection in the Museum has grown with innumerable donations of items relating to the history of Ararat and district. Our dedicated band of volunteers work hard to present displays for the interest and education of visitors.
