Why an activity club?

Experience and research has shown that the best way to prepare for and to enjoy retirement is to become involved in one or more interests, making new friends to replace the previous companionship of work-mates. Keeping physically and mentally alert, being stimulated by learning new skills and sharing our own and others' experiences in congenial company, banishes the loneliness of isolation.

Membership entitles one to share in the activity groups, attend members meetings and to receive a quarterly newsletter.

In the beginning

Life Activities Club Whitehorse was founded in March 1974 as the Nunawading Early Planning for Retirement Group. It was one of several groups in Melbourne designed to assist members of the working community to prepare themselves for a happy, useful, stimulating and physically and mentally healthy retirement.

The emphasis nowadays is to provide for people, irrespective of age, who are no longer in the work force or anticipate leaving the work-force, an opportunity and the environment for them to participate in a wide range of activities.

Where are we?

With a membership of over 800, approximately 75% live within the City of Whitehorse, the balance are spread wider across the eastern side of Melbourne. We do not have a particular hall or meeting place to call home. Activities that require a regular meeting place use various halls throughout Whitehorse, members homes or Forest Hill Shopping Centre. Other activities that meet at a different location each month can travel throughout Melbourne and surrounding districts.

What could we do without volunteers ?

In short - NOTHING.

With no paid staff there would not be a club without the many members who volunteer their time and expertiseso that the many different tasks required are carried out. The tasks include being on the Committee of Management, Activity Group Leaders, Supper Convenors, Newsletter Coordinators and generally assisting in running the club.

Newer members should consider taking up some of these tasks early in their membership as it is a good way of widening their social circle and learning more about the benefits available.
