Kyneton Campaspe River Project

In early 1996 our club initiated a Community Project involving the cleaning up of the Campaspe River and installation of a walking track, boardwalks and lookouts along the river. With financial assistance from a Government Grant we were able to employ 10 long term unemployed people under the D.E.E.T. Scheme for a period of six months.

The project also involved many hours of volunteer work by our members.

The general aims were:

(a) promotion of the Campaspe River as an asset for reasons of recreation and tourism.

(b) establish full public access along the river from the Mollison Street bridge to the weir.

(c) encourage improvement of the river ecological system.

(d) link the river walk with a future network of shared paths.

(e) develop flora along the river into balance of native and exotic vegetation.

(f) protect the habitats of indigenous fauna.

Specific aims were to:

(a) to involve the Rotary Club of Kyneton and its members in a community project.

(b) to enhance Rotarians and the community understanding of the importance of environmental and ecological protection in the district.

(c) to enhance the community and Rotary spirit within the club.

(d) to enhance members' understanding of the problems encountered by long term unemployed members of the community.

(e) to provide the long term unemployed of the community access to training and employment opportunity.

Apart from the D.E.E.T. Scheme an estimated $140,000.00 has been donated in time, money, skills, expertise and machinery.

Stage 1 of the project was officially opened by The Hon. Marie Tehan on 13th September 1997 as part of the Kyneton Daffodil and Arts Festival. Stage 2 includes, among other works, the rebuilding of a concrete weir was carried out by Coliban Water at a cost of $10,000.00. as their contribution to our club's project. Already the river walk is being used by many of the local population as well as visitors to our town.

Our club has received recognition of this project

(a) District 9800 Community Service Award,

(b) Keep Australia Beautiful Certificate of Commendation 1996

(c) Certificate from the Kyneton Tourism Authority.

(d) District 9800 Environmental Award 2002.

In 1999 further work was undertaken on another section of the river under a D.E.E.T program.

Further concrete pathways will be installed in this Rotary year as it is an ongoing project.
