The gates at the corner of Mollison and Clowes Sts were a gift of Mr R D Elliott and his sisters (Mrs Dunstone & Mrs Rudall). Mr Robert Cochrane Elliott's father purchased the farm "Benrigg". R C Elliott purchased the store at 48 High Street in 1875, where he brought up his family. He was councillor of Kyneton Riding, becoming president of Kyneton Shire Council in 1890. He was a Freemason, committee member of Kyneton School of Arts and of the Mechanics Institute, board of management member for St Andrews Church and Board of Advice member of the State School. The family moved to Queensland in 1897, before moving back to East Melbourne, where Mr Elliott died in 1915 aged 74 . His wife, Marie Jeanella, lived to the age of 93, dying in 1936 in Glen Iris. Both are buried in Kyneton Cemetery. |
