Reginald Ivon Argyle was a Kyneton Shire councillor from 1897-1901. He served as Liberal MLA for Kyneton from November 1900 until May 1904, then MLA for Dalhousie from June 1904 until his defeat in November 1914. During this period, he became a minister and was government whip and secretary to cabinet, 1902-1909.

He was born on 11 December 1859 in Kyneton to parents Edward (grazier, born in England) and Mary Clark. He was educated at Collegiate School, Kyneton and Wesley College, Melbourne. He was married twice: to Alice Geary on 15 April 1884 (one son, one daughter); to Frances Brown on 23 October 1908 (one daughter). His brother was Sir Stanley Seymour Argyle. His profession was a civil engineer until at least 1884; he bacame a grazier on the family farm at Kyneton. He was prominent in founding the Kyneton Butter Factory in 1891.

In 1923 he sold the family farm, moving to the Melbourne suburb of Bayswater. He died on 3 September 1936 in Croyden and is buried in Lilydale Cemetery.
