Kyneton is 80 km from Melbourne and was first surveyed in 1849, apparently named after Kineton in Herefordshire, England. It grew up in the 1850s and 1860s, largely as an overnight stop for travellers from the goldfields at Castelmaine and Bendigo on their way to Melbourne. It is about 500 m above sea level and its rainfall averages 815mm per year. |
