Quercus canariensis (Algerian Oak) (Listed by the National Trust, T11780. Significance: Regional) From North Africa. Planted on 19 May 1863 on the occasion of the marriage of the Prince of Wales to Princess Alexandra. A planting ceremony was held after a procession through the town. Councillor Jarrett, in planting the oak, said that he wished the tree to be recognised as the Queen's Tree, after Queen Victoria, the groom's mother. Captain Boulton then planted an ash tree in honour of the Prince of Wales, after whom it was to be named. The Reverend Mr G O Vance (Anglican minister) then, after a lengthy speech, planted a pine and named it in honour of Princess Alexandra. The ash and the pine, planted on "the rise eastward from the central (Ebden St.) gate, do not appear to have survived. |
