In my second Future Feature - "Which Is What Makes Time Travel Possible" - I looked at how time travel works in the universe of Back to the Future. I even compared it to other modern uses of time travel - in film and television - to see how the device can be applied differently.

The point of that article was to prove a consistency between all three BTTF films. The rules writers Bob Gale and Robert Zemeckis used in the three films were evenly applied and they did not cheat the audience in any way.

How many Martys and how many Docs and how many DeLoreans there are at any point in the trilogy are all contentious issues. But the following guide has been constructed with a view to dispelling some myths and aiding readers in seeing how the timeline looks. It is only concerned with the number of DeLoreans at any point during the second and third parts of the trilogy.

If this doesn't settle some arguments, I don't know what will.

The chronological listing of the life of the DeLorean from Jan 1, 1885 to Nov 16, 1955. Follow the progression of the De Lorean through the film's narrative by reading the numbers in parentheses - from (1) The De Lorean in 1955 from Part I to (6) The De Lorean in 1885 in Part III

NOTE: Pay particular attention to the names of the film above each table. The dates in Table 2 only correspond to the events of Part II - this is not the makeup of events in the original film. There is only one DeLorean in 1955 in the original film.

NOTE: The black boxes represent part of the timeline that is irrevocably altered. So, eventually the De Lorean is buried in the mine, but it has not always been there. We see two completely different versions of this period in Parts II and III.
