Biggibilla Art & Cultural Development
|
In
December 1998 we received a grant from ATSIC Indigenous business incentive program to
conduct
an
art and cultural project specifically aimed at the Australia Post market. We were
privileged to engage the services of Biggibilla,
a world renowned Aboriginal
artist
and storyteller who has a long standing alliance with our Kurnai community.
Three workshops were conducted, one in Bairnsdale
and two at Biggi's Melbourne studio.
Biggi was able to share with our women cultural
knowledge, stories, art techniques and design.
He provided valuable links to our culture and
inspired the women to further research, restore and implement our much fractured culture.
We look forward to further developments of our artworks and an ongoing fruitful alliance with Biggibilla.

Djeetgun Kurnai is a registered provider of
Adult and Community Education. During 1999 we commenced an Oral History project funded by
the Gippsland Regional Council of Adult Community and Further Education. The project
documents the stories of our women who grew up on Lake Tyres Aboriginal mission. This
project is extremely important to the preservation of our cultural heritage. We anticipate
completing further collection of stories in October 1999. Further funds for the
presentation and publication of the stories are currently being sought. In 1999 we were also fortunate to receive an equipment grant from ACFE to purchase a fax machine, filing cabinet, desk and ergonomic chairs. We were recently notified that a Pentium III has also been granted to us. In the year 2000 we successfully tendered to the Office of Training and Further Education to deliver accredited training in Bruthen, Bairnsdale and Morwell. Certificate courses will commence in March 2000. |
Skill.Net Internet Access Training We recently launched our
Skills.Net funded and supported internet training and access project which will give the
opportunity for 100 people to train for a minimum of five hours on the internet.

Kurnai Boorais (babies)
Two years of research, consultation and planning with the
Gippsland Area Consultative Committee has culminated in a Commonwealth Department of
Employment, Workplace Relations and Small Business funded Business Development
Project. A six month trial production run of Aboriginal Porcelain Dolls has commenced. The
first of these dolls will be auctioned on the Internet, the remaining dolls will be
marketed locally, nationally and internationally. These dolls will be used to test the
market. Business plans will be prepared for the ongoing doll business and regional
Aboriginal Business Development Centre. |
