Koonung Mullum Forestway Association

The KMFA was formed by local residents in 1987 to bring together the numerous groups and individuals opposed to road projects threatening the Koonung and Mullum Mullum Creek valleys in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne, Australia.
Picture of Mullum Mullum bushland With the Koonung valley lost to Stage 1 of the Eastern Freeway extension in 1995, the preservation of the Mullum Mullum is the group’s current focus. The Stage 2 extension through Melbourne’s last unspoilt wildlife corridor  is scheduled to commence in early 2001.

The State Government's announcement  in October that 1.5 km of the 5 km extension would be built as a  tunnel offers some protection for the bushland between Hillcrest Reserve and Chaim Court. But the valley at Deep Creek Road will still be devastated by an 8-lane surface freeway, and Mullum Mullum creek towards Ringwood almost completely destroyed by the proposed Scoresby Freeway interchange.

The Eastern Freeway extension is part of a larger scheme to “ring” the whole city with freeways: a form of traffic management that is already outmoded overseas. The suburb of Ringwood could become the junction for three major freeways, with more than 100,000 vehicles a day expected to converge on this already congested business and residential district.

KMFA promotes environmentally sustainable alternatives to these projects, which will:

·

·
·
·
·

protect and enhance our last remaining metropolitan green spaces, both for native plants and animals as conservation zones, and for humans as places of rest, inspiration and tranquility
provide world-class, state-of-the-art public transport
conserve our diminishing fossil fuels
reduce air and noise pollution
make the urban environment a less stressful, congested and alienating place to live.
KMFA works closely with Environment Victoria, Streets for People, Public Transport Users Association, Preserve Ringwood and Its Surrounding Environment (PRAISE),  the Anti Ring Road Organisation., Knox Environment Society, Friends of Merri Creek and Save Albert Park.

We meet fortnightly in the local area and welcome the participation of all who share our aims.
Individual or family membership of the Association costs $10 annually and covers subscription to
our newsletter valley watch. Please make your cheque or money order payable to “KMFA Inc. Fighting Fund”.
