It was 1989. On a dark Saturday afternoon the wind howling and the light dimming. The afternoon was quickly fading and so too were Kangaroo Flats hopes of victory.
A two day game played on Saturday and Sunday of the same weekend saw a young man stride to the centre wicket with the "B" Grade side in dire straits at 6 for 1. Chasing 423 against an in form Eaglehawk led by ( I think Brett Lee and Glenn McGrath). The youngster who strode to the wicket that day would be forever remembered in Kangaroo Flat history. He had stupidly doubled up on a 38 degree day and in the morning had bowled 30 overs (or there about) for the figures of 8-145 (a little expensive).
He could hardly muster the strength to mutter a single word but he limped to the wicket cramping in more than one muscle, sweat dripping all over his meek frame and a definite stench in his daks.
This boy was a lamb to the slaughter, but he was showing plenty of guts (just like Orto or Wighty).
There he stood, two centres he asked for, the umpire obliged with the mandatory "You're right on it mate". he shaped up, Brett Lee stormed in. It was short, he got inside the line and took an almighty swing. The crack was heard all around the ground, no one saw the ball until it crashed into the fence over the bowlers head. Everyone looked around to see blood pouring profusely out of the young mans head, the ball hadn't hit his bat. Four leg byes was the call.
The young lad who wore blood for the club is now refrained to a wheelchair. His name is Timmy and for obvious reasons will remain as just Timmy.
A prestigious award has been developed in his name, winners will be decided by club stalwarts and Kangaroo Flat socialites Stagey and Bazz.
The winner is entitled to wear a designer shirt proudly showing Timmy reenacting that famous delivery and is entitled to tap teammates on the shoulder at the pub and receive copious amounts of beer. This honors Timmy who since his 68th operation is not allowed to have beer, even through his intravenous drip. So good hitting and hope you can emulate the Timmy legend.
