ABOUT YOUR COMMUNITY HOUSE

 

Kerrie Neighbourhood House Inc. is a not-for-profit community organisation that was established in 1977.  A Committee of Management, made up of community members is responsible for governance of the House which is funded through the Department of Planning and Community Development.  The City of Monash owns and maintains the building, providing substantial in-kind funding.

 

Most classes and activities are held on a term basis, although some programs and groups continue throughout the year.  Kerrie Neighbourhood House office is closed all public and school holidays. 

 

 

The Disability Discrimination Act is intended to give students with disabilities the same rights as other students.  However, students that would require additional support and a reasonable adjustment of the course, should discuss requirements with the House Coordinator prior to enrolment as there may be a more appropriate alternative activity.

 

HOW TO ENROL IN A COURSE:

·        Course fees are payable on enrolment, 7 days before commencement of course, unless specified otherwise.

·        Please include a stamped self-addressed envelope with postal enrolment to ensure return of receipt.

·        Concession cards (Pensioner & Health Care cards) must be produced on enrolment to take advantage of any discount.

·        Refunds are provided if a class is cancelled.

·        Refunds will not be given should a student discontinue a course, or choose not to attend classes.

·        Should a returning student wish to attend for only part of a course, fees are set at $10 per hour or $15/2 hours dependant on a vacancy being available.  This policy does not apply to first time students who join an activity which has already commenced.

·        Enrolment cancellations are accepted up to 7 days before a course starts, however an administration charge of $5.00 will apply.

Creative Art & Meditation for Children 6-11years (September School Holidays)

This workshop is about encouraging children to express their feelings through creativity.  Assists in building self esteem, helps with relaxation through art, play, music & meditation.  As children learn to explore, accept & release their feelings through creativity it helps them to feel more confident, move forward in their lives &  embrace their potential.   Art is a process of play.  Life is a journey to be enjoyed.

Learn to make music with your children.  Learn how to develop a calm focus.  Rediscover natural rhythms such as the heartbeat and the breath.  Express rhythms through movement.  Create rhythm through the voice and with clapping.  Turn everyday objects into musical instruments.  Sing easy melodies.  Facilitated by Jarek Czechowicz.

 Yoga for Senior School Students (years 10, 11 & 12)

Senior high school can be extremely stressful, physically, emotionally & socially.  The pressure of study, deadlines & change can be overwhelming.  Yoga offers a host of physical & emotional benefits to assist during these years.  Yoga can relieve tired, tight, stressed bodies & minds, providing effective skills & relaxing breathing techniques to help deal with all the issues of these final years.  Regular Yoga Practice = Look Good, Feel Better.

Cake Decorating Class

“Royal Icing” – review, update or learn from the beginning, this will be a course that will fit your needs.  Using this wonderful medium, create lace work, bridge & extension work and learn how to attach it to your creations. Floral Art

Covers simple to advanced techniques of flower arranging; incl. materials & equipment; design styles and use of colour.  Hints and tips on where to buy your flowers & materials.  Economical designs are featured including the use of flowers & foliage from your garden.  This course can be tailored to your needs.  Students may also choose to study ‘Certificate of Floristry’ through our accredited tutor.

Latin Dancing

Meditation with Kathryn

Singing for Pleasure

‘Discovering You’ – Going back to the Workforce? (New)

We all have great skills & knowledge gained over the years, during our lives.  Sometimes it is hard to get focused on where you are at, what you want to do & how to get started.  Unleash your potential by attending the ‘Discovering You’ workshop.  This workshop is all about finding your feet to return to the workforce, changing your direction, living out a dream or to continue finding out more about yourself.

Introduction to Computers & Word Processing

This course is designed for the beginner.  Develop your confidence in and knowledge of computers in a fun, supportive environment.  You will learn how to use a mouse and develop skills with Windows such as opening and closing programs, using the Control Panel to customise the computer to suit your preferences, basic computer maintenance and some file and folder management.  From there you will be introduced to MS Word to develop basic work processing skills, such as entering and editing text, formatting text and inserting graphics.  This course provides a good basis for you to delve further into the exciting world of computers.

Computers – Internet & Email

Discover life with the internet.  In this course you will learn how to use Internet Explorer to explore websites and surf the net.  You will be introduced to effective search techniques and learn internet “house-keeping” skills.  Using a free email account you will learn the basics of email: writing & sending email with attachments and folder management to organise your email.  It is advisable that you have some knowledge of the use of computers or completed a basic computer class prior to this course.  This class will return in Term 1, 2010.

 

French for Beginners

Basic French, ideal for those travelling overseas or wishing to explore French culture.

Japanese Heritage/Community Language Class

Mandala Painting Class for Adults

Enjoy the journey of creativity through Mandala painting. Mandala from Sanskrit means circle and completion.  A mandala is a process, a beginning, an ending, a discovery and a possibility bringing healing and completion to help us move forward unimpeded by the past.  No previous skills needed.

 COOKING AT KERRIE

Chinese Cooking with Luana

Join our healthy Chinese cooking classes here at Kerrie using natural, traditional ingredients.

 

Each lesson is a step by step demonstration and includes a full meal by sampling a generous helping of two popular authentic dishes. The lessons are held in an informal atmosphere and above all you will be able to cook these dishes at home for your family and friends.

Indian Vegetarian Cooking

A cooking course to explore the delights of Indian Vegetarian Cuisine.  Includes Rice (Pulav) Puris; Indian Bread; Various

PLAYGROUP

Playgroups provide opportunities for social interaction, intellectual stimulation and encourages learning through play.

 

Kerrie Neighbourhood House coordinates parent run playgroup session from Monday to Thursday at various times.  Groups are organised according to age.

 

Facilities include a shady adventure playground with a variety of outdoor toys and equipment.  Inside the large playroom is well heated/cooled with a good range of books, toys, puzzles, CDs, art and craft supplies, dress ups and musical instruments.

 

Kitchen facilities are available with free tea and coffee.

 

Fees:  $35.00 per term (one session per week)
