National Junior Classic Stars

The National Junior Classic brought together some of the best junior basketball teams from Victoria, NSW, SA and the ACT over the Queen's Birthday weekend. Koonung players picked up one Gold medal, and five Silver medals, while one of our coaches picked up a silver medal of his own.

Victoria Bodo (U11 KN1 Girls) represented the Bulleen Boomers in the U12 girls. Bulleen went in ranked number 8 in Victoria yet still qualified for the National Final against Diamond Valley Eagles and went on to win the final and take home the National Title! Congratulations to Victoria who played a major role within the team.

Melanie Bateman (U9 KN1 Girls) representing the Nunawading Spectres, has already played in two Classics, an amazing achievement for someone of her age. While her team finished 11th, she can still be proud of playing in a team that qualified for this elite tournament. Well done Mel - with 2 years of U12s to go, you still have plenty of time to bring home the National Title!

Madison Taylor (U17 KN1 Girls) represented the Nunawading Spectres in the U18 age group - they reached the final but unfortunately fell short against Dandenong by 9 points. Congratulations Madison on your silver medal!

Tom Hillman, Marc Pittonet, Peter Wilson and Liam Kenyon (pictured with their coach Greg Jeffers) represented the top ranked Bulleen Boomers U12 Boys team. After dealing comfortably with Broadmeadows by 30 points, South Australian team Norwood by 49 points and Nunawading Spectres by 35, they went into the finals with confidence. Their quarter final was against Eltham - after a brilliant start they found the going thereafter a bit tougher but still managed to scrape over the line by 7 points. They then overcame Dandenong in the semi-final by a comfortable 22 points, putting them into the National Classic final on Monday against Knox Raiders. Both Knox and Bulleen had dominated the tournament up until that point - and as might be expected the Final was an epic arm wrestle. The game was close the whole way, and Knox ended up in front by 2 points at the final buzzer.

Congratulations to all our players who performed at this level, in what is viewed as the National Championships by many. One gold and 5 silver is a terrific performance.

Koonung's Princess of the Court

Basketball Victoria today announced Koonung’s Jemma Hillman as ‘Princess of the Court’ for the first fortnight in May 2007.

Jemma is in her first season of A Grade in Under 9’s and is already becoming a very strong player. Jemma is 8 years old and in Grade 3 at Mont Albert Primary School. She has been playing basketball for 2 years - she began playing basketball because she grew up watching her big brother Tom play and couldn’t wait to join in. Tom still plays basketball and Jemma’s dad also plays.

Jemma is a great defender and always listens to her coach; she has an exceptional shooting technique and always tries her best. She is becoming known for being a strong player who can score regularly and play defence beyond her years and she always plays in a sportsmanlike manner.

“I nominated Jemma for the ‘Princess of the Court’ Award because over the last 6 months she has developed her basic basketball skills to a high level which demonstrates the improvements made to the Koonung Basketball Club over this period.” said Greg Jeffers, Head Coach at Koonung.

The ‘Princess of the Court’ is an initiative of Basketball Victoria’s Women in Basketball program. Supported by the State Government, the program aims to increase female participation in all aspects of the sport of basketball. Basketball Victoria selects ‘Princess of the Court’ winners based not just on performance, but also other qualities which make them an asset to the sport.

“Congratulations to Jemma on winning the ‘Princess of the Court’ award for the first fortnight in May. We wish her all the best for her future in the sport of basketball,” said Wayne Bird, Chief Executive Officer or Basketball Victoria. Jemma will be presented with a 12 Panel Molten GF6 Basketball and a certificate.
