Bushwalking Canoeing Boating Picnics

Kananook Walking Trail commences at Eel Race Road in the north and continues for 5.7 kilometres before concluding at Mile Bridge. At this point, Nepean Highway crosses the creek. Major entry and exit points to the trail are denoted by signs designed and installed by Frankston City Council.

The number of access points make it possible to walk the entire length of the trail or to walk short sections, either returning by the same path or linking with the Seaford Foreshore Trail. An extended 12 km walk from Eel Race Road to Mile Bridge returning via the foreshore trail is an energetic option. A shared walking/bicycle path circuits the Seaford Wetlands and is also within walking distance from some northern sections of the Kananook Walking Trail.

Walk softly along the Kananook Trail. Pause to listen in silence now and then, and you will soon discover that the Kananook Creek Reserves are indeed valuable habitat for our native creatures.

Canoeing is a wonderful way to explore Kananook Creek. Sections of the creek, particularly in the upper reaches, are secluded and tranquil. If you are lucky you may catch glimpses of a cormorant, spoonbill, white faced heron or perhaps an egret. The creek is tidal, but this effect is minimized by the pumping station.

There are canoe landings at:

  • Eel Race Rd (opposite Patterson River Secondary College)

  • Riviera Street

  • Station Street

  • McCulloch Avenue

  • Fiocchi Avenue

  • Mouth of creek at Frankston

An upgrade for the Riviera Flood Complex is underway at Riviera St crossing. Under the proposal, portage will be allowed for canoeists in the vicinity of the weir.

Boating

Boat launching facilities are accessible near the mouth of the creek at Frankston.Abundant algae growth in the creek often makes the use of motor boats impractical, smaller rowing craft being the preferred option. A speed limit of 8 km operates in order to minimize bank erosion. Caution is advised as there are numerous submerged obstacles invisible from the surface. Bridges at Armstrongs Rd and Station St have a low clearance.

Picnics

Electric BBQ facilities are available at Station St adjacent to the Seaford Community Centre. Picnic and playground facilities also exist near the mouth of the creek.
