Koori Arts Collective Ltd. Cultural Statement

The Koori Arts Collective is managed and controlled by Aboriginal people.
To maintain cultural relevance  the majority of Board members are  Victorian Aboriginal descendants.

Victorian Koori artists are Aboriginal artists who are
a)Descendants of the tribal groups native to Victoria;
b)Aboriginal people who are descended from other tribal groups outside of Victoria, who now live in Victoria.

Aboriginal people in Sth. - East Aust. have in the past experienced severe disruption in arts and cultural practises and our foremost aim is to support the regeneration of those practises.

 We recognise the cultural commonalities and respect the existence and importance of the traditional art forms, social structures, values and laws of all Aboriginal people.

The KACL acts to ensure that our people have information about our own culture .  We believe that information is integral to cultural regeneration, and that we have been disadvantaged by the repression of and exclusion from cultural information.  Through our projects we support the research, restoration, and continuation of traditional arts and cultural practises.

To ensure Aboriginal people are empowered by our participation in the arts industry of Victoria; it is essential that we are employed at all levels within the industry.  This includes artists musicians, management, production, technicians, publicists, administration, finance and law.

Every project designed by the KACL will be assessed by criteria that examine the cultural relevance of and cultural jurisdictions of the project and whether the project empowers Indigenous people.
