The Avalanches
Since I Left You
[modular]
Score: 9.6

Waiting. That's what I have been doing for the last few years. Waiting patiently for The Avalanches to bring out a full-length album. That wait is now over and I have two words to say: AVALANCHE ROCK. This cd makes me want to get up and shake booty. This cd makes me wanna rock out all night. I remember reading an interview with Darren where he said The Avalanches are about creating one big party. I say they take that further by buying an island and creating their own country. I'd be first to apply for citizenship. I don't know what else to say. I don't care what style of music you are into. Buy this now.

I have this little ritual I go through when really shitty things happen. Like the time my car got broken into five times in the span of 2 months. The morning after the fifth break-in I slowly drifted out of bed, grabbed my cd player and had a bath. Choosing the right cd for the moment is of upmost importance. It can't be no pumping up music like Metallica "Ride the Lightning". There are the select few that are guaranteed to work but on this particular morning I was feeling adventurous. I picked up 'a working title in green' and gazed at the jewel case pictures. A girl having fun on a rainy day. It looked like just the right thing. I popped it in, put the volume up loud, lay down in the bath and felt sorry for myself. The noise coming out of the stereo seemed so soothing. The vocals painted a picture I could relate to. The music talked to me as though it understood how I felt. Frustrated, angry, tired, desperate. As the steam rose above my head, I felt faint. An arm came out of the stereo, put its hand on my shoulder and said "everything is going to be alright Josh, stop worrying." Two hours later the water was cold, my hands wrinkled. I got out of the bath, washed of my misery.

I wish someone would invent a permanent song remover for the removal of crap songs. If I got my hands on one I would remove that Robbie Williams song off my brothers 100% hits cd. It drives me up the wall. I'd also remove tracks 4, 5 and 6 off this. I"ll give you a rundown of how I worked out the score:

Mindsnare (Tracks 1, 2 and 3) - 3 more quality songs from the heaviest band in Melbourne. Beltsy has the best scream on this planet. 5 out of 5.

Congress (Tracks 4, 5 and 6) - Annoying metal. 1.3 out of 5 for the barely listenable parts.

Score 8.7

My first introduction to Quixote was through their first little gem on makoto. There was only one thing I really disliked about it and that was the fact that it could have been recorded a little better. This is their new one and it rocks out pretty much in the same way but with a better sound quality. The music has a math rocky feel to it with some rad vocals. There is a lot of emotion on this cd. Like not the generic "emo" screaming/crying emotion but sincere from the heart stuff. I'm surprised I haven't heard much about them. I dig the vocals and I dig the music. Comprehendo?

These guys got their name from a crazy artist called Henry Darger who scavenged in garbage cans and spoke to himself in numerous voices. That's definitely some shit I like. I can also see a Guy Debord influence in some of the lyrics with mentions of alienation and the spectacle. The music is nothing short of ingeneous. Keyboard driven chaos with some sexual energy, a tinny guitar, and male/female vocals. The closest thing I can think of to their sound is 'camera obscura' but that is only because of the keyboards. I caught them live a while ago and their guitarist wears black leather pants and spits a lot. I thought that was cool. The drummer sings as well. He must have good coordination.
