2. The Performers Subject to change
Traditional / Mainstream
Formed in 1984 by ex-leader of New Harlem, Chris Ludowyk handpicked the cream of Melbourne’s jazz talent to form the “Society Syncopators”, now known as “The Syncopators”. Excelling at the music they love and loving the music they excel at, they are recognized as one of the leading jazz groups in Australia by critics and jazz fans alike. Arguably they are regarded in the world as the leaders in their field. This, plus their stage presence and sense of humour invariably draw standing ovations worldwide.

YVETTE JOHANSSON
Swing, Soul, Bossanova
Young vocalist Yvette Johansson, inspired by Aretha Franklin and Ella Fitzgerald, is Melbourne’s most exciting and versatile young performer. Yvette has been wowing local and international audiences with her dynamic style and vocal excellence for many years. Her Ella Fitzgerald tribute filled the Green Room at the Crown Casino for the Melbourne International Jazz Festival and she is a favourite at Melbourne's most popular club, Bennett’s Lane ‘Jazz Lab’.
Country Jazz

With a style described as alternate swamp roots, Swann bridges the gap between gospel and old school R and B performing original and authentic roots music .
Swann’s music career began as a session freelance drummer working in Australia and internationally with many well known artists, culminating in 2005 with the release of his first solo album “The Braves”.
Swann has performed and toured with such artists as Norah Jones (chosen as the opening solo act on her Australian tour)
Top of Page
JULIE O'HARA, PETER BAYLOR AND FRIENDS
"An outstanding singer".....Laurence Donahue-Green (All about Jazz Magazine, New York)
"O'Hara's vocals are imbued with a strong jazz feel with eloquent phrasing, melodic variations and rhythmic expression " John McBeath (The Australian)
"With her perfect pitch, skillful improvising and ego-free style, O'Hara has carved out a reputation on the Australian and international music scene for high-quality performances that are accessible to everyone". Ken Turnball (Castlemaine State Festival review - vocalese project).
Vocalist, improviser and songwriter, Julie O'Hara has been active in jazz for almost twenty years, growing up in Melbourne, Australia, performing with Big Bands, gypsy swing, traditional jazz, R&B swing, bebop and vocalese.
Julie has earned a reputation for her prodigious activity in Melbourne's jazz and music clubs, national and international music and jazz festivals as a versatile and committed vocalist and songwriter.

HETTY KATE WITH THE IRWELL STREET STRING BAND
“The musicianship on display is stunning, but, the real gem in Hetty’s voice – stunningly evocative and tinged with an infinite sadness.” John Freeman – John Freeman Writing UK
“Hetty is based in Australia which is their massive good fortune and Britain’s loss. She has the most gently seductive “little girl” voice I’ve heard since first encountering the (then!) young Ella and June Christy. And she has a masterful way with lyrics; bringing them to vibrant and exciting life as if each were an expression of her own private thoughts….we’ll hear a lot more of Hetty Kate in the future.” Brian Harvey – www.radiojazz.co.uk
Born in England and raised in Australia, Hetty Kate is a jazz vocalist with a distinctive voice, pure tone and an interest in straight-ahead jazz and vintage music. In the last five years she has appeared on six albums, four of which are with her own bands.
Melbourne guitarist Sam Lemann and Hetty Kate share a deep affection and genuine feeling for the sweet swinging style of Peggy Lee & Dave Barbour, Julie London & Barney Kessell and Mary Ford & Les Paul.
In June 2009 Hetty & Sam released their first collaboration, a sweet collection of ten favourite songs titled “A Late Brunch on Irwell Street” with Andy Baylor and Leigh Barker- beginning the story of The Irwell Street String Band.

Folk / Accapella / Gospel
All girl group Salvation Jane burst onto the Australian folk music scene in the early 1990’s, primarily focusing on a cappella bluegrass gospel. Their stunning harmonies and powerful vocals wowed audiences across the country, from Port Fairy and the National Folk Festivals, Maleny Festival, and many others. With various changes in personnel and an evolution in style and use of instruments, they toured the UK and New Zealand, had several children between them, and finally bid farewell to their fans in 1996. Now these singing mavens are back! Returning with many of the songs that people loved to hear, as well as new material, Salvation Jane will put a smile on your face with their wide range of styles, collection of instruments and silly jokes! They are Tess Sexton, Penny Larkins, Anna Fletcher, Jenny Hateley and Rose Sexton.

"FAT MAX is a Mansfield based blues/jazz/soul band. The Jamieson Jazz Festival will feature two of its members, guitarist/vocalists Derek Beautyman and Al Pirie.
As well as originals, FAT MAX draws on material from artists such as Tom Waits, Keb Mo, Sting, Ray Charles, Bob Dylan and Paul Kelly.
FAT MAX's unique style of "cool blues" brings a new dimension to some of the great songs from these legendary songwriters".

Bluesy swing
“Sensuous and cinematic, a kind of bluesy swing with a smokey noir vibe” Melbourne Times.
Over more than 10 years, The Pearly Shells have gained a reputation as Melbourne’s premier Jazz/Swing/R&B band with a classic style and look reminiscent of the Golden Age of Ellington, Basie, Goodman and Brother Ray.
Famous for their Swingin’ back beat sound and Hollywood style, luminescent clam-shell stands, The Pearlys have been providing atmospheric sound tracks and irresistible dance grooves in bars, clubs, festivals and dancehalls as well as at parties, receptions etc.
With their enormous repertoire and variety of band sizes, The Pearly Shells pride themselves on striking the right tone for any musical situation.
Playing their own arrangements of the Big Band classics and Pearly Shell originals, the band is famous with dancers for its ability to leave the written music behind “Riffout” when things are really swinging!
South African born jazz vocalist and violinist, Fem Belling's versatile voice and powerful stage presence, lends authenticity, verve and warmth to the jazz classics.
Born to an artistic family, Fem's father is a renowned jazz pianist and made sure she was bathed in the soul of Duke Ellington, Stephan Grappelli, Count Basie, Nancy Wilson, Charlie Parker, Billie Holiday, Nat King Cole and many more.
Fem pursued an international career in Musical Theatre playing lead roles on the West End stages. After spending the last 5 years treading the boards of the West End in London, playing the lead role in Hairspray The Musical, Mabel in Fame, Rusty in Footloose and Cats and others, she has returned to Australia. On her own path of musical discovery she had been hugely influenced by Rachelle Ferrel, Natalie Cole, Ella Fitzgerald, and Manhattan Transfer. Throwing her own spin on jazz standards and paying homage to the Jazz Greats, Fem showcases her passion for scatting and her sheer joy of making music.
Fellow musicians unanimously agree that Joe Ruberto is not only an exceptional musical talent but also and above all a gentleman with whom collaborating is an absolute pleasure.
Joe can be seen frequently playing piano at Melbourne's top venues including jazz temple Bennett’s Lane, Crown Casino's premier nightspot JJ's Bar & Grill , Hotel Sofitel, The Grand Hyatt, the Melbourne University Club and of course at the annual Melbourne International Jazz Festival.
Joe is regularly in demand as musical director for local and international acts and along the years has accompanied Normie Rowe, The Drifters, Phyllis Diller, Ernie Sigley, The Coasters and a host of others.
He also led a thirty piece orchestra for the International Song Festival held in Melbourne and staged at the prestigious Palladium at Crown.
He has various overseas performances to his credit -the 1996 concert in Japan with the Theatreworks Company.
Joe has performed for the Melbourne International Jazz Festival, New Caledonia Music Festival, Apollo Bay Music Festival, Wangaratta Jazz Festival and is a regular at the Noosa Jazz Festival.
