31st May 2006 - Young Women's conference.The media guide was launched on the 17th of March 2006 in an event for journalists and community workers. The Hon Andrew Robb AO, MP Parliamentary Secretary Minister for Immigration and Multicultural Affairs launched the media guide. The speakers at the event included Matthew Ricketson, Journalism Program Coordinator RMIT; Peter Manning, Adjunct Professor in Journalism University of Technology, Sydney; Farah Farouque, Social Affairs Editor The Age; Margaret Donaldson, Director Race Discrimination Unit, Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commision. The launch was attended by 45 media representatives, government and community workers. The media guide attempts to shed light on the very basics of Islam as well as the extraordinarily controversial and complex areas of Islamic law that many journalists have grappled with in attempting to report on the dynamics of the ‘Islamic World’. We hope that the guide contributes to accuracy and fair reporting of Muslims and leads to the recognition of women’s
15th Feb 2006 - Statewide Training for Teachers and Youth Workers. Working with Muslim Youth in Australia’ was the theme and the title of the training held on Wednesday, February 15 2006 at Carlton Primary school. Approximately 60 secondary school staff and youth workers from related youth organisations attended the training. The training focused on an overview of Islam and the general Muslim community living in Victoria. The aim of the training was to give the opportunity to school staff and related youth organisations who are working with young Muslim clients to understand the basics of Islamic teaching. We started with a plenary of speakers addressing issues of concern to young Muslim people, in particular young Muslim women and the afternoon consisted of three concurrent workshops. The workshops included presentations on a specific topic and identifying strategies.
9 Sept 2005 - Young Women's conference. On September 9 2005, the Council held a one day conference for young women at the Hume Global Learning Centre in Broadmeadows. ‘Building Together Islam’s Multicultural Face in Australia’ was the theme and title of the conference. The conference focused on young women in secondary schools across Victoria. Young women from metropolitan Melbourne, Shepparton, Cobram, and Geelong attended the conference. A total of 140 young women were present. The aim of the conference was to provide an opportunity for non Muslim young women and Muslim young women to come together, to connect on their similarities and explore their differences. The conference facilitated young women’s personal development through conceptual and interactive workshops. We started with a plenary of speakers addressing issues of concern such as, early marriage, media representation of young people of culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds and dealing with racism.
