We are very grateful for the generous support both personal and financial we have received from many of our members. We wish we could leave it at that but so little is known about these wretched illnesses that your committee has decided that we should help the promising research into GBS and CIDP being carried out by Dr Andrew Kornberg at the Royal Children's Hospital.
As described by Dr Kornberg in his May'95 address to The IN Group (Newsletter No.11), the research involves understanding how potential pathogenic antibodies cause disease such as GBS and CIDP. An understanding of the processes involved can be used to formulate treatment options. As part of this study 20 years of stored serums from patients at Fairfield Hospital with GBS will be examined to identify specific antibodies. As well there is ongoing collaboration with Dr Alan Pestronk in St.Louis, USA.
Dr Kornberg for his research needs amounts ranging from $2,000 - $5,000 for laboratory equipment to $40,000 for a laboratory technologist. So donations (which are tax deductible in Australia) from $2 up to $40,000 would materially assist this much needed research.
The fundraising has got off to a great start with member Alan Goyan donating $1,000. He says he hopes his donation will encourage "twenty other silly old buggers to do likewise!"
