Humanism and Justice

The Humanist Society of Victoria & the Centre for Applied Philosophy and Public Ethics (CAPPE) are offering an 18 month scholarship for study at the University of Melbourne commencing in 2005. The scholarship is for the completion of a Master of Arts research degree at CAPPE. Students may choose to enrol either in an MA in Philosophy (Advanced Seminar and Shorter thesis) or in the MA in International Justice, which is a research MA with a coursework component.

Research Proposal

The research proposal for the MA may draw on a wide variety of topics in Humanist thought, moral and political philosophy, and thinking about social justice issues. Research topics should reflect the key themes of humanism, including a scientific approach to understanding, and a commitment to equality and social justice, and to improving the quality of life. Topics that apply these themes to issues of contemporary importance, such as refugees, land rights and indigenous issues, international justice, medical ethics, and the environment, are encouraged, but applicants should feel free to develop proposals which reflect their own interests.

Eligibility and Application Procedure

Students must satisfy the standard entry requirements for a Master's degree at the University of Melbourne. For more information go to:

Relevant professional experience will be taken into account.

Applicants should send a 600 word research proposal, academic transcripts, two references, and a CV to the address below. The successful applicant will then be asked to apply for admission to an MA degree. Applications should be received by December 10, 2004 and be sent to the address below.

International Students are welcome to apply.

Publication and dissemination of research

Towards the end of their research scholarship recipients will be required to give a presentation of their research to a forum organised by the sponsors. Recipients will also be required to write a short accessible article on their research for a community journal.

Scholarship terms and conditions

The scholarship rate is A$17,915 pa and is generally tax exempt. The scholarship is for full time study commencing in 2005.
