Becoming Married

Becoming Married at Holy Trinity

Come and see us! Let us help you decide if Holy Trinity is the place for you to publicly acknowledge your commitment.

Preparation for Married Life

Some may be tempted to put more preparation into the service of marriage than into their marriage as a relationship. Perhaps this is because of the expectation that marriage comes 'naturally'. And yet marriage is one of life's great times of transition. All times of transition, even joyous ones, are stressful. Marriage does not provide a fairy-tale ending to a relationship but a new beginning. Skills acquired in preparation assist couples to both cope with the challenges and enhance the joys of committed relationship. At Holy Trinity we offer a comprehensive preparation time based around important relationship themes. Preparation should not be rushed so it is best for couples to contact the parish at least six months before the proposed date of marriage. Each preparation session runs for an hour. Topics covered include:

Introduction to Christian marriage.

It is essential that couples bring birth certificates as well as any relevant documentation such as evidence of how any previous marriages ended. Couples must sign a Notice of Intention of Marriage no earlier than eighteen months and no later than one calendar month before the marriage. In the case of divorced people seeking marraige,it is a policy of the Anglican Diocese of Melbourne that permission of the bishop be sought for an Anglican clergy person to conduct a service of marriage. One party must be baptised. Baptism can be arranged as part of the preparation. This is also the time for couples to decide if Christian marriage is the way they want to express their commitment.

Relationship Education

The PREPARE/ENRICH programme helps couples to:

Preparation for the Service of Marriage

During preparation couples come to express their relationship in the selection of some elements of the marriage service. Couples need to consider in consultation with your priest choice of:

The elements are held within the following outline:

Music

The choice of music must be in keeping with the nature of the Christian marriage service and the dignity of the building in which the service takes place. Couples must confer with the organist and the clergy about their choice of music. Our organist is Mr Hugh Fullarton, tel. 0418 584 852 email: hughharoldfullarton@gmail.com. The choir is available to sing if requested. Live, rather than recorded music is encouraged.

Flowers

We will provide flowers and have them arranged. The cost of flowers is included in the wedding fee. Members of the Flower Guild will make every effort to coordinate with the colour scheme.

Photography

Couples are asked to consider carefully the place of photography in the service of marriage. It is fitting to have some reminders of the occasion as long as respect for the Church and the good order of the service is maintained. At the signing of the register there will be a pause at which the official photographer may take photographs. A video camera may be used from the side of the chancel. Under no circumstances will artificial lighting be allowed.

Fees

At present the fee for marriage at Holy Trinity is $600 payable to the parish office in the week prior to the wedding. These prices are subject to change. Fees included the officiant and organist, documentation, flowers, a contribution to the church and special preparation of the church building for the service of marriage. PREPARE/ENRICH is a separate fee.

The Involvement of other Clergy

Services of marriage in the Anglican Parish of Holy Trinity are conducted by members of the clergy ministry team. The involvement of other Anglican clergy or clergy of other denominations in an assisting role needs to be discussed with the ministry team in order that appropriate invitations can be made.
