Demetra Vassiliou Egan
Demetra Egan was born in Greece where she completed her secondary education.
She has lived in Australia since 1974 where she studied Modern Greek Language
and Culture at Deakin University (B.A Interpreting/Translation) and the
University of Melbourne (PGD Arts, Modern Greek). She is an Accredited
Interpreter/Translator and has held the positions of Coordinator, Translation
Unit (Greek) and Officer-In-Charge of Information and Cultural Relations
at the Victorian Ethnic Affairs Commission (1985-1993). She has been teaching
interpreting/translation (1988-96) at Deakin University and translation
at Melbourne University 1995-). She has been the Secretary of the State
Institute of Interpreters and Translators (1984-86), Secretary (1992-96)
and Chairman (1997) of the Hellenic Studies Forum.
She is currently the Executive Officer of the Centre for Research and
Development in Interpreting and Translating at Deakin University, Member
of the Examiners' Panel (Greek) of the National (Australian) Accreditation
Authority for Interpreters and Translators and President of the Hellenic
Studies Forum. She has been very active in the Greek community in Australia
and the instigator of important initiatives. She has researched issues
concerning Hellenism and Greek migration in Australia, published mostly
as conference papers. She has translated numerous scientific papers, articles
and literary works and is currently translating (into English) the "History
of Greeks in Australia" vol. I (by Prof. A.Tamis).
