Craftwork: Cross-stitch of US Space Shuttle.

Canvaswork uses any type of stitching done on a canvas surface. The canvas is an openweave fabric or plastic material where stitches are worked in and out of the holes in the mesh. Two common types of canvaswork are:

  • Tapestry, also known as needlepoint, involves working 'half' cross-stitches on a canvas to produce a rich, thick woven-like material resembling carpet. The word itself comes from the French word tapisserie meaning 'carpeting'.
  • Cross-stitch - the stitches are crossed to produce a thicker block of colour on the canvas.

Canvaswork is used for items such as cushion covers, bags, or displayed in a picture frame.

Note that any of the stitch dictionaries listed in the Basic Techniques section may also contain stitches relevant to embroidery.
