May 2005 - Leonard Long - Marketing Your Passion

What a privilege it was to listen to Leonard Long’s story and to be inspired by his enthusiasm for his art. Len captivated us all: artists, crafts people and even those who, like me, knew nothing at all about painting.

Ninety-three years old, Len has spent over 60 years earning his living as a painter, and has exhibited and sold works all over the world. While talent is obviously essential, Len stressed the importance of good old-fashioned hard work in achieving your goals. (He still paints a full 5-day week.) Len also emphasised the need to be organised and focussed. All these factors are vital to the success of any business.

When asked about the keys to marketing himself and his art, Len said that the two main things were choosing the right people to represent him, and only exhibiting in the best galleries.

What came through clearly in all he said was a strong belief in himself and a true passion for his work.

Len’s story prompted much discussion, and, as usual, the networking was great - people just didn’t seem to want to leave.
