The Herring
Island Gallery is the converted scout hall. The fireplace and the marks
on the floor are the give-away signs – the architecture is
now inspired by the place – a gift to the arts by the Myer
Foundation and the genius of architect, Greg Burgess.
Herring Island is one of Melbourne’s premier wilderness parks
in
the heart of the city and situated on the Yarra River in Toorak. The
island represents the struggle of ecology with the increasing drought
in Australia, along with the opportunity for sanctuary. Its parkland is
the home of many important sculptures of the past century and
encourages a journey of exploration. The island is a haven for
Australia’s great wildlife and a retreat for people from the
bustle of the city right next door. It is a resting place and a refuge,
whilst continuing to maintain a connection with the city. The Oasis of
Herring Island reminds us of the importance of keeping our parks and
ourselves healthy and sustainable in times of drought. As a refuge it
is in isolation, so it also reminds us of the benefit of working
together both in our arts practice and in our support of the land and
each other.

history of Herring Island.

talk to them about
their inspiration.
