Hillman Cycles - A Brief Overview

For over 50 years, Hillman Cycles has been a custom builder of racing and touring bicycles.

The business was started by local racing star, Henry Hill in 1946. He decided that due to his knowledge and racing background, opening a retail bicycle store would be the ideal way to support his family.

When Hillman Cycles was first established, some of the big names in the sport were Mockridge, Opperman, Sid Patterson and the Rowley brothers. In the early days, Hillman Cycles put its support behind athletes such as Alan Grindal, Clyde Sefton, and Ray Bilney. More recently, Hillman has supported Gary Neiwand and Steven Foster.

Since Henry Hill established the business, many well known names in the Victorian cycling industry such as Greg Griffiths, Bert Glennon, and Nick Hays have furthered their careers by working at the store.

The main goals of Hillman Cycles have remained steady over the years. They are:

The current proprietors of Hillman Cycles are Gordon and Barry Hill. Gordon and Barry have been in charge since 1989. Tim McCarthy has now joined the team, bringing 15 years of experience in the bike industry with him. Tim works in a managerial and sales role. Today's staff include:

Gordon Hill - Frame building and Repairs
Tim McCarthy - Manager and Sales
Steve Waters - Mechanic
John Hitchins - Mechanic

There are also 3 part time workers responsible for sales and repairs.
