Australia

Our branch of the Kirkpatrick family is located in the State of Victoria, which
is at the bottom of south east mainland Australia.

Like many families, our forebears originally emigrated from Scotland to Ireland
and then their descendants eventually moved on again to another country.

We have only been able to trace, to date, that we descended from John and Susannah
Kirkpatrick (nee MacKenzie) from Belfast, Ireland.

John had an occupation listed as a soapboiler in Belfast. They had a
son, Israel, born in 1832, who came to Australia in 1857 aboard a ship called the
White Star. The ship departed Liverpool, England, on 22 June 1857 and arrived in
Australia in December 1857.

In 1857, Israel Kirkpatrick had been a soap maker in Belfast and continued this
trade in Australia, where he joined a Mr Spinks to set up a business to make
candles and soap. Soap and candles were in great demand by the gold miners who
flooded into Australia during the gold rush period. This business operated until
1937. Israel married Agnes Finlay and had children Alan, William, Israel, Agnes,
Emma, Maurice, Elizabeth and Andrew.

Israel(the father)died 1879 from typhoid fever in Guildford, Victoria, Australia.
His third child, also named Israel (1861-1932), was my grandfather. He married
Maria Fisher and they had children Vera, Reginald, Iris, Maurice(my father)
and Alan (all deceased). My father and mother (Elizabeth Jardine) married in 1933.

Further detail of the Kirkpatrick and Jardine families, traced to-date,
is on Heather's page, accessed from the link below.
