Banyule 214
(Jeff Wilson 72, Darren Butterworth 42no, Chris Carroll 25, Brad Grindal
5/71) and 3/62 (B O’Connor 27no) def Heidelberg 181 ( Ryan Smith 48, Brad
Grindal 41, Russell Gardner 34, Phil Barnes 5/50, B O’Connor 2/32)
The ball has
won the battle over the bat in the First Grade Final. Banyule’s Greg Anderson
and Heidelberg’s Steve Favrin and Steve Cashen, all of whom have had good
seasons, were dismissed cheaply.
At the close
on Day 1, Banyule had been restricted to 9/214 from their 80 overs. On Sunday
the final wicket was taken on the seventh ball of the days play leaving
Heidelberg to face 78 overs. Banyule took the new ball after 70 overs and
managed to capture the wicket of Brad Grindal two overs prior to stumps. West
and Balcombe remain the not out batsmen with Roberts and Noonan still to come.
If the two existing batsmen are able to weather the initial onslaught in the
first ten overs next week, odds would favour Heidelberg, however at this point
there remain 38 runs needed with 3 wickets in hand.
Continuing the
battle on the final day, the ball won again with Banyule capturing three
wickets for four runs to destroy all hopes of a Heidelberg victory. After being
7/177, Heidelberg collapsed to be dismissed for 181. Phil Barnes captured two
of the wickets to fall to bring his total to five for the innings. This victory
has given the Bears their ninth premiership in the last nineteen years. It is
an impressive record made even more so by the fact that in that time they have
never been Runners-up. Each time they make the Final, they have gone on to
record a victory.
Heidelberg 100
( Martin Legge 22, Mark Favrin, Alcaide 3/24, Dryden 2/14, Stuart 2/28) lost to
Heidelberg West 4/226 (Andy Stuart 103no, Alcaide 65, Toohey 2/41)
The ‘Rags to
Riches’ story. At the end of Round 9, Heidelberg West were sitting in sixth
position and trying to fight their way into the Finals. They are now Premiers
following a great victory over the weekend. On Saturday, they managed to
restrict Heidelberg to the very low 100 and then wrapped up the game with a
very decisive performance.
Rosanna 312
(Tony Lambert 68, James 62no, Van Poeteran 34) def Edinburgh 184 (Howell 67,
Dikeakos 53, Dunbar 5/61)
Losing 5/31 on
the final day, left Edinburgh far short of the total required for victory. The
loss of top scorer, Howell, to a run out mixup with his batting partner, was
the start of the collapse.
Banyule 238 (B
Wilson 43, A Young 45, J Poyser 30no, G Renshaw 27, S McGowan 4/68) lost to
Rosanna 266 (M LeGassick 69, J Crosthwaite 48, K Matson 30, P Jones 26no, D
Jones 23, M Harte 5/52, G Barnes 3/50)
On the final
day, Banyule lost 6/95, to be dismissed, 28 runs short of the Rosanna target.
Meggsie captured four wickets for Rosanna.
