About Us

The Hobsons Bay City Band was first formed in 1996 under the name of the Wyndham Symphonic Band (WSB). Starting from nothing more than a small group of musicians, it rapidly grew into a band of 20 that produced a strong, clear sound. Early rehearsals were held in various venues around the City of Wyndham until a suitable venue could be secured.

The search for a venue continued and in March 1999, the band moved rehearsals to St. Paul's College in Altona North, thus entering under the umbrella of the City of Hobsons Bay. It was also around this time that the Hobsons Bay City Council began a search to find a band that they could call their own and to represent the City of Hobsons Bay.

The former WSB won this bid and in 2000, it was appointed the official band for the City of Hobsons Bay. This appointment saw a change of name and uniform and gained the generous support of the Hobsons Bay City Council.

In 2007, the Hobsons Bay City Council offered the use of the newly refurbished Laverton Old School in Altona Meadows. The band moved its weekly Monday night rehearsals to the new venue, which it currently shares with other community groups from the area.

Regular performances are generally held around the Hobsons Bay and surround areas and include a variety of functions from community events such as the Bayside Festival, Williamstown Festival, Laverton Festival, Summer Sounds Concert Series, and the Point Cook Sunday Craft Market. Other performances may include school fetes, entertaining residents in local nursing homes, and many more.

Members of the band range from beginners to professional musicians aged from 7 to 70. Though the band primarily consists of brass, woodwind and percussion players, everyone is welcome to join.
