Preparing & spinning a fine yarn

This class will look at various preparations of fibre for fine spinning, from the sheep through to finishing the yarn.

Students will also be dealing with tops, sliver and other commercial fibres.

Shibori silk
Colleen Weste

Students will learn Shibori, the Japanese tradition of producing textile design by giving cloth a three dimensional form by folding, stitching, twisting, pleating and wrapping. The cloth is then secured in a number of ways such as binding and knotting before dying.

Knitting stainglass windows

Learn how to make a sampler of a lovely rug using up lots of your odd balls of wool. By using easy knitting and crochet stitches this pattern knits up into a beautiful stain glass window effect. Beginners welcome.

Silk spinning

This Class will cover the basics of preparing and spinning different silk preparations; silkcaps, tussah, and mulberry silk. Students will also blend silk with exotic fibres, and will then be encouraged to creatively incorporate silk into the production of beautiful yarns.

Botanical dying leaf prints

This class will explore two options of botanical contact printing on cloth, using suitable plant material and various mordant methods. Students will need to have completed Helen Rossi’s Class, making a nuno felted scarf for this summer school class.

Kumihimo braiding

Learn how to make beautiful Japanese braiding. In the morning session we will be making an eight strand braid. In the afternoon session we will use silk to make an eight strand bracelet.

Silk painting
Pat Beasley

Using French Dyes, the workshop will explore the possibilities of painting on silk, working wet into wet as in water colours and using salt and alcohol to create different effects. Graphic imagery will be obtained by using gutta resist and wax.
