Geelong West Toy Library

What makes a good toy?

Ever wondered how we choose toys for the toy library? The committee spends hours deliberating on which toys to purchase with our precious funds. We only buy reputable brands and follow the advice provided by Toy Libraries Victoria when selecting new toys.

TLV advise the following when selecting toys:

* the toy must have good play value;

* the toy must be well designed and constructed and be suitably robust and safe;

* the toy should not encourage violent play;

* the toy should not invite emotional attachment;

* the toy should not be gender specific (except for some costumes), re-inforce sexist stereotypes or promote a negative self-image;

* the toy must be among the best of their type of item available;

* the toy must be made of wood if a floor puzzle;

* the toy must be made of wood if a puzzle with less than thirty pieces;

* the toy must not require batteries except where the toy has good play value without using the battery feature;

* the toy must not have dangerous small pieces such as magnetic marble-type pieces; and

* the toy must be suitable for toy library borrowing which means:

- it must fit into an average size car

- it must be able to be cleaned effectively, preferably not fabric (except costumes)

- it must not contain consumable items such as crayons, game pads etc. and

- it must not have too many pieces (unless the toy library has the capacity to manage them).
