Step inside the world of Glenn Syndal.
It's dark in here, and the ghosts of the past circle around you, howling softly and whispering amongst themselves.
The atmosphere is cool and fresh, but the temperature is quite warm.
A soft hint of incense hangs lightly on the air.
As your eyes adjust to the darkened room, you notice that the walls are covered in pictures and wall hangings. There's a touch of Buddhist and Hindu influence, with yin-yangs, Chinese dragons and a giant "Om" sign surrounded in multicoloured swirls. There's pictures of musicians like Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin and The Doors. There's also prints of paintings by the likes of Dali, Monet and Da Vinci.
There's a large heavy-looking oak bookcase in the corner. Moving a little closer, you see philosophy books, poetry books and biographies on the shelves. The names Arthur Rimbaud, Bob Dylan, Nietzsche, Kant, Stephen Hawking and Jim Morrison feature amongst the many-coloured book spines.
Presently your ears prick up, and over the coming minutes you catch snippets of songs from a well-used record player.
the soft sound of an acoustic guitar and harmonica from mid-60s Dylan...
the wah wah psychadelia of Hendrix or perhaps Clapton...
the solid chugging rhythm of Creedence Clearwater Revival vibrates through the floorboards under your feet.
Then, from behind a beaded curtain, comes the man himself. Glenn Syndal. His age defies speculation, his look, his attitude and his sense of fashion and style constantly change from one day to the next.
He talks quickly and is expressive and animated, leaving you with the impression that he'd never run dry of ideas. Questions about philosophy or spirituality bring a glow to his eyes, and he will debate the topics for hours with you if given a chance.
It makes you smile, because last time you met him he was silent, in an almost meditative state, and would only speak when spoken to. However this is the man. Never predictable, never definable.
He welcomes you to his world, and invites you to browse at your own leisure.
