The GIPPSLAND SAFE WATER ALLIANCE is a non-profit community organisation which has been formulated by concerned residents within the Latrobe Valley and surrounding areas serviced by Gippsland Water. In 2005, Gippsland Water, as directed by the Department of Human Services, notified all residents that our water supply will be artificially fluoridated. There has been a long history of debate about the perceived benefits of fluoride, beginning in the 1940's. Since then fluoride has been added to water supplies in the USA followed by other countries in the western world. Australia commenced fluoridation in Beaconsfield, Tasmania in 1953, the same time as ALCOA's new aluminium production facility came on line only 2 miles away. Despite protests, investigations and legal action, fluoridation has spread - Sydney in 1968, Melbourne in 1977. There has never been a scientific study in Australia or the world to prove the safety of fluoridation. No studies have been undertaken in Australia to prove fluoridation perfectly safe for all people. Fluoride is a poison that accumulates in your body and one-third of a teaspoonful of sodium fluoride is estimated to be a lethal dose. There has been no clinical research which proves fluoride stops dental caries, only clever and persistent marketing. Rural communities have fought to keep our water as pure as possible. The Gippsland Safe Water Alliance continues to oppose fluoridation and keep our friends and families free of even more chemical additives. Our free choice of health for our families will be severely violated with the artificial addition of fluoride to the very core of our bodily intake - water.
