Since the 1999 election, Graeme has continued his work and interest in both Rail Trails and general recreational tracks and trails throughout Victoria.

"I will ensure that the new Government understands the importance of tracks and trails to local communities and visitors, and it must continue financial support for both maintenance and promotion of this wonderful asset.

"The previous Government created policies in this area which led to Victoria being recognised as a World Leader at an International Conference in 1998. It is vital this status does not diminish as many other countries have recently lifted their game in this area of recreation and tourism" Graeme said.

In July 2000, Graeme visited England on a study tour of National and County Parks to assess how Tracks and Trails are maintained managed and promoted in that country.

His report will be lodged in the Parliamentary Library in due course and extracts will be posted on this site.

"My overall impression is that Victoria is extremely lucky to have almost unlimited access to public land for general recreation. England's National Parks are mostly privately owned by farmers and access is available to roam but with restrictions.

"In the case of Rail Trails, English authorities are now spending millions of pounds buying back disused corridors that were sold when the lines were closed. Then they have to spend as much again building new rail trails.

"The valid point is that authorities believe it is worth spending the money in order to build more trails. There is a lesson here for Victoria, that we do not sell Government land that may be of value in the future for trails or any other public purpose.

"Victoria still has at least 40 disused Rail Corridors that have not yet been designated Rail Trails so it is important for Victorias future that opportunities are not lost by selling it off " - Graeme said on his return.
