The majority of Greek-born residents in Hobsons Bay arrived during the post-World War II migration wave particularly between the mid 1950s to late 1960s. Many settled in Melbourne’s inner suburbs close to industrial areas for employment and cheap housing. Spotswood, Newport, Altona (North and East) attracted many Greek migrants for these reasons.

 

Most Greek born residents in Hobsons Bay come from the Northern region of Greece. A small but significant number come from Cyprus and the Greek islands. Most speak the regional Greek dialect of their birthplace.

 

It is important to mention that Greek residents of Wyndham do not have a Church of their own in their municipality and therefore they form part of the community and congregation of the Church in Mills Street, North Altona.
