Seasons
Seasonal Differences
European settlers to Australia brought with
them their calendar of four equal seasons: Spring, Summer,
Autumn, and Winter. These seasons do not, however, closely
match the regular, yearly patterns of environmental
conditions and natural events that occur here.
Aboriginal Calendars
The survival of the Australian Aborigine
depended on knowledge of the sequence of natural events
related to the life cycles of useful plants and animals in
their area. The variety of environmental conditions in
Australia is reflected in the number of Aboriginal calendars
that are still known.
Six Special Seasons for
Victoria
Most Aboriginal calendars have five to seven
seasons. In Southern Australia much knowledge of Aboriginal
calendars has been lost since white settlement. Using natural
events, data collected in recent years by government bodies
and community organisations, a calendar that has six natural
seasons has been developed.
