Agarics

The Agarics, or gilled fungi, is a large Class of Basidiomycetes. Agarics are usually referred to as the toadstool and mushroom. In The Grange there are several different Agarics, including the Ink Caps, Fly Agaric, Ghost Fungi and Cortinaris species.

Different Stages of the Fly Agaric (Amanita muscaria)

The Fly Agaric toadstool, has a red cap with small white bumps on it, and a white stalk. It is highly poisonous fungus, and found under the pine trees near the car park of the reserve.

The Ink Cap Fungus

The Ink Cap Fungus (Coprinus niveus), is a large and conspicuous fungus found in The Grange. When this fruiting body first appears, its cap is almost as long as its stalk. As it digests this cap, the fungus ages. The shaggy cap retreats and produces a black liquid, which has ink-like properties and can be used to write with.
