Being different

Help! I think I may be gay / lesbian / bisexual / transgender ?

Don't worry! You are NORMAL! There are many other people just like you in Victoria. In fact, statistically, you probably know someone already. It is often quoted that up to 10% of the population is gay / lesbian / bisexual.

Where can I meet others like me?

There are tens of thousands of queer people in and around Melbourne. One only has to visit a large community event to see evidence of this! And even in rural Victoria, there are lots of poofs and dykes. There are many social and support groups both in rural Victoria, and in Melbourne. You can call us for details. Alternatively, try the queer media. You can listen to the radio, watch TV, or read a queer Newspaper to find out what's happening. See our links page for details.

Health and Medical

How can I find out information about HIV / AIDS and safer sex?

Call the Victorian Aids Council, or visit their web site.  The Melbourne Sexual Health Centre can also help. See our links page for details.

How can I get an HIV / AIDS test?

Your local GP or medical clinic can arrange this for you. The Melbourne Sexual Health Centre also provide a free anonymous service.

What about other Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) ?

HIV / AIDS is not the only STI to worry about. Things like herpes, hepatitis, crabs, and gonorrhea and others can be also be contracted through sexual contact. The AIDS Hepatitis and Sexual Health line web site has further details. See our links page for details.

Rights and Legal

Is being gay or lesbian illegal?

NO! Homosexual activity was decriminalised in Victoria in 1980.

What protection do I have under the law?

The Equal Opportunity Act protects your rights to a fair go. In Victoria it is against the law for someone to treat you unfairly (discriminate) or harass (hassle or pick on) you because of your actual or assumed: * Gender Identity * Sexual Orientation * Lawful Sexual Activity * Marital Status * ...and various other reasons See the Equal Opportunity Commission link on our links page.

What is the age of consent for same sex couples?

The age of consent for same sex couples in Victoria is the same as for heterosexual couples - 16 years of age. However, you cannot have sex with someone between the ages of 16 and 18 if they are under your care, supervision, or authority. There are further provisions that discuss and prohibit sex with persons with impaired mental functioning (mental illness, intellectual disability, dementia, brain injury).

Religion

Homosexuality is wrong. It is against my religious beliefs.

Some religions teach that homosexuality is wrong. They may even quote passages from the bible or other religious texts to prove this. The bible also states that people who work on the Sabbath should be put to death (Exodus 35:2). Is a 2000 year old book with questionable translations and interpretations so relevant as to be taken literally today? Many religions believe we should "Love thy neighbour as thy self". This is probably more relevant in today's society.
