Presidents Message
My how time fly’s when your having fun, it is hard to realize
the club is almost half way throughout it’s year. Looking at the events
since the AGM it has been a smorgasbord of activities with many club
members being involved. With BBQ’s a fishing weekend, and spent a
Saturday chasing many Elephants around a small hall.
The 25th celebration dinner saw the launch of the
VI3BJA call sign and we have had some interesting speakers at the
Monthly meetings.
Our ‘Prac nights have been well attended with most pieces of equipment
returning home with the smoke still safely inside it’s components.
Behind the scenes there are individuals sharing expertise when equipment
malfunctions and help is needed, 146.225MHz is an effective 000
number for many when things go wrong with the station gear.
Some members spend time in their kitchens making delicious cakes
so that our waist lines remain adequate in keeping slacks safely
hoisted. All this and more has been part and parcel of the GGREC
year so far, and there is more to come.
The VI3BJA roster is complete through until November the 17th.
The list of modes used and countries worked continues to grow. Helmut
VK3DHI is quite excited at working a VP5 on the Turks & Caicos
Islands in the Caribbean, I expect his own QLS card is already on
its way.
There will be plenty of opportunities in November and December for
those of you whose far have not activated the special call.
The event queue is being firmed up with events though to March
2003 but we still require ideas for speakers from February 2003.
Any bright suggestions to either Ian VK3BUF or myself.
By now you should all be aware that our night out planned for Sat
14th at the Highway Tabaret has been transferred to the
21st , time the same at 6.30pm. Hopefully it will mean
that more of you can attend, my thanks to Reg who did a great job
contacting everyone once the change was known.
Two events to note for October are, 19th JOTA/JOTI at
the guide hall Bruno will need helpers for this.
Also on the 26th we have scheduled a Fox Hunt which will
be discussed at the next meeting.
From September 27th Pat and I will be away with the caravan.
We are taking the slow road to Murray Bridge for the 2002 ALARA
Meet over the weekend Oct 4th –7th. The plan
is to spend a few quiet days at Nelson on the Glenelg River on the
way over. We will possibly join the travellers net on 14.116MHz
at times and listen most mornings (except ALARA days) on 10.125MHz.
Also will listen most evenings when free on 3.640MHz (+ QRM ) at
2100 Vic Time.
I seem to be QRU for now, must save one or two brain cells for
next Month HI. CU at the next meeting.
73s Peter
Important note to VI3BJA operators.
John VK3ZK please pass your log book on to Reg VK3UK by 29th
Sep.
Jan VK3NOV please pass your log book on to Phil VK3YB by 13th
Oct. Thanks.

The Great
Australian Science Show 2002
The Great Australian
Science Show (GASS) is over for 2002. This year, GASS was held at
the New Melbourne Museum and was supported by all Melbourne amateur
radio Clubs.
GGREC was represented by Mike Ide, Jan, and myself. I took
on the task of co-ordinating the roster for the event as I had
done last year.
Jan generously offered his time and experience in teaching Morse
code to young children. Mike provided valuable information by being
a walking encyclopaedia in matters relating to amateur radio and
beyond.
Together, we complemented the skills and expertise of other Clubs
in demonstrating amateur radio to members of the public. In general,
the public at large were amazed by the developments in amateur radio
and how we are still leading the way in innovation and experimentation.
The IRLP station drew a lot of attention from amateur stations
from around the world. They were happy to talk to the public and
spent many hours describing where they were, what the landscape
was like, and all the usual things that amateurs talk about.
Having the station on for three days all day, provided an opportunity
too good to miss for amateurs that heard Australian accents emanating
from their local repeaters for hours at a time. Many overseas amateurs
worked IRLP to Australia for the first time during GASS.
I would like to thank all the Clubs that helped to make GASS 2002
a success and I would also like to thank WIA Victoria for having
the vision and drive to get all Melbourne Clubs working together
to promote amateur radio and to help our hobby grow.
GASS 2003 will again be held at the Melbourne Museum. If you would
like to be part of a great team promoting our hobby, don’t forget
to volunteer in 2003.
I will have a few GASS photos to display at the September general
Meeting.

SIMOCO PRP80
two way radios
G’day All,
My name is Barry Petersen, and I am employed by Jon Davison at
Sandown International Motor Raceway. My duties are to look after
the two way radios used by the officials at motor race meetings.
Recently someone decided that their need was greater than ours.
As a result of their visit we lost 61 SIMOCO PRP80 two way
radios (complete with battery and antenna), two 8 position battery
chargers, 3 power supplies to suit the charger and several 2 position
chargers (1 fast & 1 slow charge slot) plus extension leads
and a few antennas.
The radios were counted on the first of April after the Easternatts
meeting, then locked away until our May meeting. It was then we
discovered the theft.
Below is the list of serial numbers and a listing of frequencies
that are programmed into these radios. As you can see, they will
only work on the Sandown repeater with the exception of the simplex
channel
. It would therefore appear logical that the radios would have to
be reprogrammed so that they could use or to sell them.
If you hear or see anything of the equipment, we would be most grateful
to hear from you, with any sort of information that you have. I
feel our chances of recovery are pretty slim, but one can be lucky

Names For Harmonics
Calling a child
a "harmonic" of a ham wasn't as accurate as calling the child a
"spurious emission" or "cross-modulation product". You should never
name your child something that you would be ashamed of yelling in
public.
One's name is something that the person will have to live with for
the most of his or her life. That's why some of these 'trendy' names
would make you stop and wonder what the parents where thinking.
Anyway below there is a list of names that you could bounce off
your XYL (if your game!) when the pitter patter of little feet is
pending,.
Guy (wire) Di (pole) Eddy (current)
Moon (bounce) Aurora Con (nector)
Rod (ground) Dot Meg (ger)
Page Chip Nixie (tube)
Mica Buzz Reed (switch)
Skip Kit Cal
Crystal Cap Belle
Jack Mike Farad
Poly (ethylene) Rhombic Neon
Aerial Morse or Morris Occar
Array Millie (amp) Ion
Mo (bile) Ray (dio) Zena
Sparky Henry Volt
Ken (Wood) Drake Sol (enoid)
Dottie Mark ('n space),
Thomas Edison called his daughters "Dot & Dash". Well, they
had real names too. One thing is for sure, a new baby can sure make
enough QRM to make any good ham go QRT for a long time!
In a couple of years, when you find your child unattended in your
shack and you didn't catch him/her before he/she managed to pull
just about every wire and cable in sight out from their components....resist
the urge to rename the child "Murphy"
It's All Downhill From Here!

Business Arising from Previous Minutes:
- Hamfest sale – All went well, but a bit squashed. $1471.59 in
net profit. Committee to investigate possibility of a bigger venue
for 2003.
- Our 25th anniversary dinner went well, - do it again
in another 25 years.
- Lysterfield Lake – BBQ went ahead ok despite cool weather
- Preparation for Science Show proceeds ok. Bruno and Mike will
attend.
- Philip VK3 YB has the clubs VI callsign this week. More operators
needed.
- Bruno will coordinate JOTA at the Guide Hall this year. Operators
will be needed. (BUF to operate from Drouin Scout hall and link
to GGREC.
New Business:
- RD contest this weekend – VK3 to have little chance of success
because of weighted scoring system.
- Bruno has been trying to contact with the WIA regarding a frequency
for the IRLP project. The WIA tech Advisory group is operating
really, really slowly. (like a fly wearing football boots crawling
through a barrel of lard)
- Much discussion about Australia Day and Labor day weekends in
2003. A proposal has been made for Jindivick/Nerrim Sth weekend
for Aust Day and a Heyfield/Maffra trip on Labor Day weekend.
More info to follow.

of Sept.
(Note this has been moved to the 21st of Sept.)
- Next general meeting Albert VK3BQO will be demonstrating 240V
domestic control systems.
- Some discussion was had about a bicycle tour of French Island
on Nov the 9th. More numbers needed before this one
can be confirmed.
- Keith VK3HSS highlighted some problems in joining the W.I.A
because of inflexible payment methods.
- Russell VK3MWR made coments about ACA license fees being too
high. Some discussion ensued about the futility of making a submission
in the current climate. No action taken at this stage.
- Immediately after the meeting a demonstration on Ten Tec equipment
is to take place.
Meeting closed at 9:10pm
