President’s
Ramblings
Hello everybody,
Hope you all had a restful and peaceful time over the Christmas/New
Year period. I also hope that the fat man was kind to you!
As for myself
I seem to be overworked and underpaid but that’s
life I guess!
The Christmas breakup at my place was certainly a good day.
Thanks to all involved in organising it. Particular thanks
to Reg UK for the organization of games and prizes. It all
added to the festive atmosphere.
Over the last few weeks we have a little drama with the
possible purchase of radios as was mentioned at the November
meeting. I still do not have anything concrete to report.
Those of you on email would have been kept fairly well up
to date. Suffice to say we are still waiting!
This Saturday
most of the committee is heading up to Ian BUF’s place to look at all the antenna gear that is
keeping his weeds happy. We will be trying to work out what
the club should keep and what we may look to offload (with
the club’s permission of course). Ian has been his
usual tolerant self by keeping the stuff then but it is time
we did something about it. More information at the General
Meeting I hope.
In this issue of Gateway I have taken the opportunity of
a quiet month to present the proposed regulations for use
of the club rooms. The RFID project is just about ready and
we need the proper procedures in place pretty much straight
away. So have a read and bring any ideas along on Friday
night.
Hope to see most of you on Friday.
Cheers, Andrew VK3HF

RFID Access to Clubrooms
Ian VK3BUF has, in amongst all his other projects, almost
completed the task of building the RFID access system for
the clubrooms. Basically this means those members that are
interested in using the clubrooms at times other than regular
club nights will be able to do so. However , there will be
some rules and regulations that we will need to enforce to
make it fair for all.
Over the next few pages you can read the proposed rules/bylaws/regulations.
There will be opportunity for refinement/changes at the January
General Meeting.
Ian has some ideas on how it should work including getting
the committee to test the system over 6 weeks to make sure
it is functioning properly. We will also need somebody to
take responsibility for the allocation of tags and the maintenance
of the database.
Anyway have a read and let us know what you think. If you
cant make it to the meeting and want to contribute send me
an email (clinks@dcsi.net.au), ring me up (5942 5396), fax
me (5942 5896) or carrier pigeon!

Proposed Regulations for use of rooms.
DRAFT DOCUMENT ONLY
GGREC SHACK OPERATING PROCEDURES
Purpose : This document outlines the use of the GGREC Shack including specific
rules and regulations as determined by the Club from time to time
Outline : GGREC members have constructed a specially designed
shack for the use of its members. The building was completed
in early 2005. The use of the shack needs to be clearly defined
so that future members can gain the benefit of the building
and to ensure that the task of cleaning and maintenance is
not left to one or two members.
All financial members of the Club will be given access to
the building subject to the restrictions and rules outlined
below. Two members will be appointed as caretakers responsible
for ensuring the rules and regulations are adhered to.
Access : Access, in the main, will be on an unrestricted
basis subject to the following :
Membership must be a current and financial. A minimum of
12 months continuous membership is required. All unfinancial
members will have their access rights removed without warning.
To gain unrestricted access members will be required to
put a deposit on an RFID tag. This deposit will be fully
refundable on return of the device. The amount of the deposit
will be determined by the membership but will not be less
than the actual cost of the device to the club. Loss or damage
of a tag will incur forfeiture of the deposit and another
deposit fee will be required for a new tag. Any tag loss
must be reported to the shack caretakers as a matter of urgency.
Under no circumstances should any RFID key be marked with
identification as to its use.
The member must agree to the logging of their access via
computer.
The Club Shack is not available for unrestricted use on
the fourth Monday (Committee Meeting), the first Friday (Club
Prac Night), and the third Friday (General Meeting Night)
of each month. There will be other times that the shack will
not be available and these will be gazetted in the Club magazine.
In order for the club shack to operate there will be a requirement
for one member to hang their tag on a hook to allow the power
to operate. The last member to have their key on the hook
will be ultimately responsible for the cleanliness of the
shack on departure. This does not imply that the last person
out must do all the cleaning up, just that they must ensure
that it happens. Each member in attendance is responsible
for cleaning up his/her mess. The logging system will be
such that the last person to remove their key from the hook
will be readily identifiable.
The member must agree to abide with the code of conduct
contained in this document.
Code of Conduct
As a financial member of the Club you must agree to the
following code of conduct in order to be granted unrestricted
access to the Club shack :
I agree to abide by all Club rules as determined from time
to time.
I recognise that the space around the Club shack may be
used by the Girl Guides (or others) and I undertake not to
interfere with their operations in any way. I accept that
I must be circumspect in all my dealings with the Guides
and use appropriate discretion when they are in attendance.
I agree to use the Club radios in accordance with my current
license level.
I will log all radio communications in the club log book.
I will arrange for QSL cards to be sent on request when
using the club call sign.
I will leave the building in a clean and operational condition.
I will co-operate with all other members in attendance.
If I am the last to leave I will ensure that the shack is
secure.
I will report any shortcomings to the caretakers as soon
as practical.
I agree to allow my details to be logged by the RFID system.
I understand that the role of the caretakers is to ensure
the club rooms are used in an appropriate manner and agree
to co-operate with them at all times.
Any breach of this code of conduct will be viewed very
seriously and may result in the member losing their unrestricted
access rights. All breaches will be investigated and discussed
with the member/s concerned.
General Guidelines :
To discourage ants and/or other vermin the bins should be emptied after each
session. Large bins can be found at the front of the Guide Hall.
Tea and coffee
will be provided for members use, you will need to provide
your own milk if using the rooms on a night
other than a regular night. Unused milk should be removed
from the premises on leaving. If supplies are getting low
please advise the caretakers (don’t let them run out!)
All other foodstuffs should be kept in airtight containers.
Club equipment is available for use; please treat it as
if it were your own. Particular care should be taken with
equipment that is on loan (identified by a small green sticker).
Please respect our club rooms and we will get many years
of enjoyment from them. Each member will be given a copy
of this code of conduct and will be expected to sign a copy
for club records.

In the market for a NEW radio
I think Graham VK3KCS got sick of reading about the ongoing saga of the second
hand radios, and I can understand that. If you are in the market for a new radio
you could do no better than to run down to High Street, Cranbourne and have a
chat with Graham. He assures me that he will great deals for other club members.
He, also, tells me that there are 65watt, 2 metre radios available for under
$300. So I am saving my pennies/drachmas/pesetas and I am going to get myself
one of those! Might take a while though!
Seriously,
Graham has always helped members of GREC and has pointed
a few new members ours way. Don’t forget to support
him from time to time. Or at least call in for a coffee
and a chat.

A
note from Peter VB & Pat OZ
Firstly I would like to thank all of you for your thoughts and prayers while
I was incapacitated in hospital. It made such a difference to a day to see
a friendly face pop around the door with a cheerful how are you going. Thanks
too for the get well cards and the many phone inquiries Pat received.
I know
some of you found the traffic and parking situation a bit
of a headache, thanks for trying. At the moment I am out
on strict medical supervision and hope to stay that way
until a definite diagnosis is made and I can return to
a normal life and routine.
We both
feel very fortunate to have scored the hamper this year,
it has been a great help believe me. Thanks guys, your
turn next year. HI.
We have
been longingly looking at the caravan and hoping we might
join in one of the club Weekends soon. Little bit of maintenance
to do there.
2006,
a new year we hope it is a great year for each of you in
GGREC and a year of growth for our Club.
Once
again our sincere thanks at what for us was a difficult
time.
PS.
I keep hearing Club members saying the bands are dead;
Amateur Radio is going down the tube. Believe me this is
not the case. It is just that most of you are sound asleep
when the bands are active. 20, 40, 80 mtrs (even 15 & 160)
are open to DX roughly from midnight to 4am local time.
Since
coming home from hospital I have worked about 30 countries
spread over all continents. My medication is the cause
of being up, then sleep comes after 4am.
So please
when on 2mtrs or other bands that seem quiet, Amateur Radio
is not dying, it’s just that the best conditions
are when you’re in bed asleep. The Amateur Radio
world is very much alive.

I hate email hoax warnings, but this one is important!!!!
Please send this to everyone on your email list. If a man comes to your front
door and says he is conducting a survey And asks you to show him your bum, do
not show him your bum.
This is a scam. He only wants to see your bum. I wish I'd got this yesterday.
I feel so stupid and cheap. (There’s one born every minute!!!!!!)

On the sick list ….
Colin HR has been quite unwell and in hospital. Our thoughts are with Bobbie
and the rest of the family at this difficult time.
Good
to see Peter VB surface at the natter night. Hopefully
the medicos can discover what is wrong with him and that
he does not have to spend any more time in hospital.
If you know of any other club members that are not well, or need a hand with
something please let one of the committee know.
One
of the good things about Amateur Radio and this club, in
particular, is that there are plenty of people that will
put their hand up to help if something needs to be done.

Foundation Licence .. its good for radio
We received the following by email from NERG. I have re-produced it because the
whole thing is a positive step for Amateur Radio.
Hi all,
The
NERG's first Foundation training and assessment weekend
was a great success with nine new amateurs joining our
ranks, with another two very likely by Christmas. All are
no doubt looking forward to using that new radio waiting
under the Christmas tree!
A couple of minor hiccups were identified in the process and will be rectified
for the next Foundation weekend, likely to be held on the weekend 21/22 January
2006.
Congratulations
to John and the team that he assembled; he is to be congratulated
on the terrific job he did and the results achieved.
John's
full report appears below, cheers, Mark, VK3BYY for NERG

NERG Foundation licence course 10-11 Dec 05
============================
The North East Radio Group Inc conducted a Foundation Licence course
over the weekend 10-11 Dec 2005 for 12 students. Of these one left after the
training day and of the remaining 11, 9 students passed and only two missed
out on the theory but were very close.
Arrangements are under way for both these students to sit the theory paper
again before Xmas.
The theory instruction was carried out by Fred Swainston with the use of his
powerpoint presentation which was greatly accepted by all students, assessors,
and observers present. Fred managed to maintain the interest of all by varying
the instruction between both theory and practical training periods.
The
practical training by assessors, and observers worked very
well. All aspects of the practical examination were covered
in these sessions.
Greg
VK3VT acted as chef and invigilator on the day and provided
a very good variety of food for the lunches and this was
appreciated by all. My thanks go to him for this effort.
My thanks to the following assessors and observers for their participation
in this event which made the days the success they were.
Firstly
to Fred for his presentation, to the observers Michael
Owen ( President WIA), Jim Linton (President AR Vic), Jonas
VK3VF, Cliff VK3CSL, David VK3THY, and to assessors Craig
VK3CMC, Mick VK3CH, Tonga VK3SJ, Peter VK3AUE, John VK3TKH,

All ramped up…...
If you have been up to the club rooms lately you would have seen the great new
access ramp built by a number of members over a few weekends.
All
we need now is for Maria to give it the seal of approval
with a test drive!
Thanks
to everyone involved (I would name them but I will probably
forget somebody). A special thanks, though, to Ian BUF
for his usual detailed project management. Thanks to Paul
for the photos, I stole them from his web site paulstubbs.pozzie.net.

Just some of the hard workers over a few weekends. See the website for more
pictures.
I think
Ian is wondering if it will hurt if he jumps!!!

Viclink Info 2006
Welcome to the new year and with VICLINK about to resume at the end of January,
I would like to introduce you to our new service "Viclink Info" which
will provide regular updates about your news broadcast service in Victoria.

* VK3WIA Viclink's new callsign
* Foundation Watch
* Podcasting
* New webserver
* RSS News Feed

Viclink
Summer Series
Whilst
we take a short break from normal programming, we have
been issuing the Summer Series of Viclink, highlights from
the 2005 year. So far we have revisited Amateur Television
and an interview with Michael Ampt, VK3CH at the NERG open
day and an interview with Paul O'Conner from the Australian
Volunteer Coastguard. www.vk3news.info
VK3WIA
Viclink's NEW Callsign
With the support of the WIA, Viclink has been given permission to use the VK3WIA
callsign as an identifier for Viclink. The VK3WIA callsign is licensed to the
WIA and in allowing us to use this callsign, shows their genuine interest in
local newscasts that supplement the National News. VICLINK over the 2005 year
supported the National News from VK1WIA with relay station announcements, voice
work for news items and in establishing the VK1WIA Podcast.
Foundation
Watch
A new segment to VICLINK for 2006 is called "Foundation Watch", which
essentially is a club round-up of Foundation Licence education programs and
activities occurring around Victoria. Enhance you clubs profile by letting
Viclink know when you are running Foundation classes, locations, times etc.
and we will include them in the next newscast and publish them on our website.
Podcasting
Last
year we introduced podcasting to Viclink and the WIA National
News and by all accounts it's been a great success! - Podcasting
allows you to download the newscast direct to your PC each
week using an podcast application such as iTUNES, Doppler
etc. So if you can't catch Viclink or WIA National news
on-air each week, download it to your PC or MP3 player.
Enter the following feeds to your application:
http://feeds.feedburner.com/vk3news
(Viclink)
http://feeds.feedburnercom/vk1wia (WIA National News)
New
Web Server & Website
Last
year we purchased dedicated webspace to allow for faster
downloads of VICLINK. This is proving to be quite useful
and has allowed us to keep previous editions online as
well. Our webserver allows enough data and bandwidth to
ensure we can keep things flowing without interruption
and ramp it up if we need to. Likewise, our website (or
more correctly web blog) is allowing us to publish each
week audio files and news updates more easily than a standard
html website.
RSS
News Feed
Want
to keep up-to-date with the VICLINK web blog? Its easy
to use a news aggregator such a Mozilla Thunderbird to
get the latest headlines from VICLINK and other news sources.
Just use of RSS feed, http://feeds.feedburner.com/vk3news
and it will update you as new content is added.
Contributing
to VICLINK "It's your news service!"
The
hardest part about researching and publishing a weekly
news service, even 5 minutes is getting news and information
from the radio clubs around the state. Websites and newsletters
are a great source of information plus the odd email here
and there from individuals and clubs and thank you to those
clubs and individuals who supported the news service in
2005.
To continue
the weekly newscast for VK3 in 2006, we need your news!
All
we ask is for a regular email, phone call or club newsletter
that we can turn into an item each week or month. Maybe
you might like to voice the item yourself and send it in
as a MP3 file, or we can record you over the phone or Skype/Gizmo.
We can also attend in person to record your item. Just
keep us in mind when something is being planned, happens
or you hear about something happening in VK3, we can chase
it up!
Thanks
to all and let's have a great 2006!

M&DRC Trip - 22nd January
Friends, an unofficial pleasant Sunday is arranged by M&DRC for Families & Friends
on Sunday Jan. 22rd. 2006.
Timetable.
Cars assemble at Combined Clubrooms, Highett Reserve, Turner Rd. Highett at 8.15am.
Convoy departs, in radio contact (& net on 146.550 ) at 8.30 am.
Assemble in Sorrento pier carpark (South of pier) 10 am or asap. ( Hard to judge
traffic, and thus timing ).
Walk to end of pier, pay & board the good ship "Nepean" (Captain
Shannon) 10.30am.or asap.
" Nepean" departs 11 am. "Nepean" returns 1 pm. Disembark & return
to cars.
Convoy leaves for Nepean National Park. 1.30 pm. Arrive & assemble at National
Park Carpark at 2 pm. Have "cut" lunch in Carpark.
One member from each car purchases tickets for the Transporter, for "Tip
of Pt. Nepean" in the Visitor's Centre, and notes time of departure of the
Transport.
Group assembles at Transporter Station, ready for next departure.
Visit "Tip" explore fortifications, view the Rip, listen to handheld
on 156.600 NFM & other freq's.
When tired & satisfied, reboard the Transporter & return to Visitor's
Centre .
From now on, each Party operates on its own timetable. Try & have car net
on way home.
NOTES. Timetable is best approximation. Take money, handheld, field glasses,
dark glasses, camera, sunscreen lotion, lunch & liquids, hats, maybe pencils & notepaper.
Seasick pills etc. AND "Aeroguard." On cruise will see , seals, dolphins,b
irdlife. Pass "Witch's Hat, bird perches, Pope's Eye Rock. then towards
Shore, see Quarantine Station and rest of interesting shoreline back to Sorrento
Pier. Eat lunch "on the way", in boat & in carpark etc. At tip
of Pt. Nepean, use field glasses to see ships entering & leaving the Rip.
See Pilot Boat approach/leave each Ship, and try to see the Pilot's "Leap
of Faith" to/from the ropeladder on the ship. Remember Captain Carrol's
Talk ! Use handheld to listen to Harbour Control & Pilots .156.600 FM etc.
Take this opportunity to explore the fortifications, be amazed at brickwork, & remember
that all construction materials had to be ferried from Pt Lonsdale or Queenscliffe,
also much of the food for Workers & Soldiers.
The cost was enormous, and paid for by the gold from Ballarat, Bendigo etc. A
trip to & exploration of the Treasury Building in Melbourne is well worth
while for those interested in Australian History.
NOTE 1. The weather cannot be controlled. If it is bad, ring 1300 304 384 and
ask Captain Shannon's advice. If the boat does not go, the trip to Pt. Nepean
will still be "on". We will assemble at Sorrento Pier Carpark 10 am,
discuss situation, and probably make earlier start to Pt. Nepean Carpark, probably
spending more time in the Visitor's Centre, which is very good. HOPE YOU JOIN
US. Ken Morgan. VK3CEK. NOTE 2. I would appreciate some idea of those likely
to join us. Ring 95929957, or make email message to ken@melbpc.org.au

Comet Duplexor - this might help!
I always like to share amazing discoveries in AR, although
I might be the last one to discover the discovery.....??????
I had found that my comet duplexor that I purchased at the
Hamfest was not operating properly all the time but it would
come good and then I went along until the next time it operated
in an erratic manner.
Today I looked further into the problem and found that at
least on 2 meters, 10 watts at minimum is required to get
the thing working and that makes sense when you think about
it; In fact obvious. I would say there might even have been
something in the instructions about it but I never read them.
The part is most useful for connecting a 2/6/70 antenna
to a radio with 6 + 2/70 input. So at the risk of looking
like a dill, I provide this info so someone may benefit from
it. I suspect the inductive networks only function with enough
field/Power. Like Hybrid Network in telecom cct etc.
