The
Pres Says…..
June
sees our Annual Mid-Year Dinner with the venue this year
being
decided as TOORADIN & DISTRICT SPORTS
CLUB Recreational Reserve South Gippsland Hwy Tooradin. The
dinner
starts at 7pm on 24th June.
Those
people interested in purchasing one or two brake winches
for their towers
need to make FULL payment to the Club at
the next General Meeting. The amount to pay is $82.50 including
GST per winch. We need to have an order for at least 15 to
obtain this price so if we don’t have enough ordered
and payed for, we cannot go ahead. After the May meeting,
we had at least 15 orders on paper but we need the money
at or before the June General Meeting. Please pay your money
to the Club by then and I will place the order straight away.
The new Club UHF repeater is still undergoing signal strength
tests but at a different location. It is now under test at
the Club Room in Cranbourne. I will be interested in knowing
what signal strength you can receive it at any location you
care to try it from. Remember the test receiver needs 123Hz
to access it.
Those
who attended the May General Meeting spent a good part
of the night
bidding on items that they probably did
not want but bought anyway. The Club made a few dollars in
commission as the hammer fell on many small items that were
up for grabs at our mini auction. Thanks for the support
folks especially to those who bought for the sake of buying.
You don’t have to worry though. It wont make it on
the calendar as a regular event.
Elsewhere in the mag you may find information regarding
a Cup weekend trip and updates about the Hamfest which is
our next big event. Nearly all hands went in the air when
asked who would be able to help out on the day so I trust
we will see those hands with bodies attached on the 22nd
July. To help with the set up on the day, it would be great
to see you there at about 7am. (Last year we figured it was
a bit early for some at 6.30)
Andrew
is pushing me for this article so I will close here with………
73s from. Albert VK3BQO
Hope to hear you on the new UHF repeater

Just a reminder that if you receive your GATEWAY via email we do not post you
a copy as well. If you want a hard copy you can either print it yourself or
we have a few spare copies each meeting night for you to grab one. We are saving
the club about $10 (over $100 a year) a month doing it this way and you are
getting a nice coloured copy in your Inbox!
Thanks to Graeme BXG for another story which I hope to fit
in next month

QSL please…..
A recent trip to the Amateur Radio Victoria rooms in Ashburton, to pick up QSL
cards, proved that a number of Club members are still working their share of
DX, in spite of the current poor conditions. Phil VK3YB had worked a good number
of countries on CW, including USA and Russia on 80 metres. Others to have tidy
little bundles were Helmut 3DHI, Bill 3DOU, Peter 3VB, Pat 30Z and Ivan 3ARV.
It is
interesting to note that cards are still coming through
from the club's
VI3BJA operation in 2002, so one can see
that it can take quite some time for QSL’s to filter
through the system.
When Mike VK3KTO opened his letter box, he was pleased to find a direct QSL
from the recent 3YOX Peter 1 Island expedition, via the QSL manager N200.
The inward and outward QSL Bureau is a free service to financial
members of the WIA or Amateur Radio Victoria. As the GGREC
is an official distribution point, all you need to do is
place your outward cards in the box provided. In order to
pick up inward cards, you must first register with the Bureau.
If you wish to use the service, please see Mike VK3KTO and
he will be pleased to arrange it for you.

Know your license conditions….
A number of incidents have observed of Standard
and a few Foundation licensees operating within the 80m DX
Window of 3776 - 3800MHz. This is contrary to the Licence
Condition Determinations for both the Standard and Foundation
licences, which are only permitted to use 3500 - 3700MHz.
Reference can be made to the ACMA website which shows that neither the Standard
nor Foundation Licence have access to the 80m DX Window.
On the 2m band, operation in the 145.800 - 146.000MHz range is for satellite
operations only. This is because there are Mode J satellites that use this frequency
range as their input or uplink, with the downlink in the 70cm satellite sub-band.
Simplex QSO's within the satellite segment does cause difficulties to genuine
satellite operation.
Please refer to the Band Plans which can be read at:
http://www.amateurradio.com.au/download/band_plans.pdf
- Amateur Radio Victoria.
If anyone wants a copy of the PDF file above let me know and I will print it
for you. Ed.

HAMFEST 2006
The plans for this years Hamfest are going along swimmingly.
Bruno, in his usual style, is doing a great job of bringing
it all together. Just a reminder that this is our major fundraising
event of the year, so we are asking all members to pay the
$5 admission too. It’s a good cause!!!

Centenary Celebration
The Borough of Queenscliffe together with the Geelong Amateur
Radio club Inc, have cooperated to commemorate the Centenary
of the first overseas radio transmission
from the Australian mainland, which occurred between Queenscliff and Devonport,
on July 12th 1906.
The
dignitaries who attended Queenscliff for that occasion
included the
Governor–General Lord Northcote, Prime
Minister, Alfred Deakin, the State Governor, State Premier
and Postmaster General together with a number of Senators
and members of the House of Representatives. We have extended
an invitation to their present day counterparts to be present
on the day of the Centenary and the State Governor has already
accepted the invitation.
The re-enactment, which we propose to carry out on Wednesday
July 12 at the same time as the original transmission, will
occur adjacent to a replica of the original hut, constructed
by Faggs - Mitre 10. The interior of the hut will contain
radio equipment as close as possible to that used one hundred
years ago. A number of original telegrams will be retransmitted
and received from Devonport.
The equipment used for the original transmission was supplied
by the Marconi Company and the Maritime Museum at Queenscliff,
in association with Museum Victoria, has also undertaken
to provide an opportunity to display radio artifacts from
that era. In addition to some locally held equipment, we
are pleased to say that an inter-museum loan has permitted
the display of some radio transmitting and receiving equipment
held by Museum, which dates back to that period. Some of
which have not been previously displayed. We believe this
exhibition will add significantly to the understanding of
early radio transmissions, by those who visit the exhibition.
Incorporated within the exhibition will be examples of some
additional Australian firsts, in radio and electronic technology
developed as a result of the pioneering work of Marconi and
others. These will include an early flight data recorder
and cochlear implant.
A number of schools have indicated a desire to be part of
the celebration on the 12th.
The celebration will extend from Wednesday July12, 2006
to midday Sunday July 16.
Thanks to Russ MWR for the info.

This Months Challenge
There is a photo on the left of a very shady looking character. Now you all
know him, but the question is who the hell is he??
The first correct answer will win the same prize as the
winner of the Limerick Writing Competition. Now who was that
again???? OK so there is no prize but it is a challenge,
and I haven't forgot the Limerick Competition either, just
like to string these things out!!!
