Magazine for June 2002 |
Presidents Message
June, June already.
That means we are half way through 2002. It means we are almost up
to Tax return time and that we are well and truly into winter. A time
for indoor activities, log fires and warm drinks. Your committee met
on Monday 3rd June and put time into firming up club activities
for the next few months. For our June 21st meeting Mr Drew
Diamond has agreed to give a talk on the practicalities of his home
construction projects as written up from time to time in AR. Some
of his recent pieces will be on view including the receiver shown
in May 2002 AR.
July’s calender is looking busy with the usual Prac Night on 5th
July, the VHF/UHF seminars at Churchill over the weekend of 6th/7th,
on Saturday the 13th there is a working bee in the grounds
of the guide hall in readiness for the hamfest / white elephant
sale on the 20th. Exams will be held on the afternoon
of the 13th at the usual venue in Tooradin. The plans
for the hamfest are progressing well with Reg VK3UK and Albert VK3BQO
very happy with all the tables in the hall booked and interest in
outside space too (one reason for the working bee).
The 25th Anniversary dinner on July 27th
is firming up. The cost of $25 per adult with menu choices elsewhere
in the mag. We will be taking names and deposits of $10 per head
at the June meeting – please make sure the treasurer has your deposit,
name, number of diners and menu choice as we are limited on the
number that can be accomodated. Be early, be happy. All the paperwork
is enroute for our VI3 callsign to celebrate this special event
in the clubs history. We will be offering use of the call to club
members in one week blocks. A list will be available at the meeting
so please take this opportunity to put GGREC "on the air".
If you see Graham VK3KCS in the club shack with a soldering iron,
pliers etc it is because Graham has agreed to act as equipment officer
for the year. The radio room is in need of a revamp, we have HF
& VHF equipment that needs proper installation and some older
pieces retired so Graham may ask you for some help to bring things
up to scratch.
Well I think that’s enough from me. Keep a close eye on the event
queue in the mag for other events coming up or keep 146.225 running
to keep in touch. One last thought, 2003 will see the next WARC
take place and amateurs need a strong presence if we are to keep
our privileges in the radio spectrum. The WIA is the voice the government
here in Australia listen to for the amateur point of view. To send
two delegates next year will cost money, your membership of the
WIA will help. If you enjoy your hobby and wish to continue to do
so and are not currently a WIA member then seriously consider spending
23 cents a day to protect our privilleges as radio amateurs through
WIA membership. 73 Peter VK3VB

WIA Regulations
Exam Question Bank
It has been somewhat difficult for prospective radio
amateurs to confidently prepare for the amateur licence regulations
examination - but that should no longer be the case with the public
release of the WIA exam question bank.
The issue of difficulty being faced by prospective radio amateurs
in studying the regulations, and those teaching them, was raised
by WIA Victoria at the recent WIA Federal Convention as a matter
arising out of the Federal Education Coordinator's annual report.
WIA Victoria successfully moved a motion at the Federal Convention
that the WIA regulations exam question bank be immediately made
available on the Internet and via hard copies.
The question bank is now available on the Internet, and by the
end of the month through hard copies from each WIA Division and
various radio clubs.
While the question bank is free, a photocopying cost may be charged.
While the questions are typical of those used by the WIA Exam Service,
the released question bank may not necessarily contain all of the
questions that can appear on an exam paper.
It is recommended that the question bank not be the only way to
study orteach the regulations subject. It should be read with the
syllabus and existing study reference material which can both be
found at www.wiavic.org.au/edu/regs.html
The regulations question bank can be down loaded from www.wiavic.org.au/edu/
and also from the WIA Federal web site www.wia.org.au

Port Welshpool Weekend
By Pat vk3oz
About 8am on Saturday morning we packed wam clothing, picnic etc
into the Pajero, put our bicycles on the back – away from the exhaust
– and set off for Port Welshpool to join Graham, Carol, her father
John and the boys, Bruno, Val and Ian for the day. We knew that
Graham and Carol were already established in the caravan park having
spoken to them on there way down on Friday. The trip was slowed
by a damaged windscreen when a stone was thrown up by a passing
truck, but we arrived safely to be greeted by Ian and Val with coffee
and cake.
Following this we decided to go for a ride so the four of us road
down tot he jetty to check on the progress of the three intrepid
fishermen – Bruno, Graham and John, but the fish appeared to be
in no imminent danger so we road along the edge of the water and
out to the long jetty. Here the planking ran lenghways with large
gaps between planks, so Val and I walked to the end of the jetty
while Ian and Peter were happy to ride. Arriving safely back on
the path it was felt to be lunchtime so we headed to the local pub
for some take-away. The visitng Southern Cross Bike Riders Association
were most amused when pushbikes were lined up along side their Harleys
and much banter was exchanged.
When we ventured out again we found Bruno and Graham still fishing
so we left them to their endeavours and cycled around the side streets
as the wind off the sea was getting quite cold by this time. About
4pm we were ready to put the bikes back on the car and had a short
walk before heading for the cabin again. By this time Bruno was
back and getting ready for the meal which we were looking forward
to sharing together before we left. It was only a short stroll to
the pub where the food was excellent and the tables which were empty
when we arrived quickly filled up. We reluctantly left at about
8:30pm leaving the others to stay overnight.
It was a great day which we really enjoyed, thanks to Bruno, Val
and Ian for sharing your cabin with us for the day and also Graham,
Carol, John and David for your company.
PS The fish are safe until the next trip !!!!

The Club Travels East To Drouin West
By Dianne Jackson vk3ndi
A date for the barbecue has already been set
There is still such an awful lot of work to do yet.
One Week To Go
A concrete truck came down the drive to pour the
outer paths,
Hal got busy with the rake, while I was sewing grass.
18 cubic metres of crushed rock, was dumped in small rock piles,
when all is spread , smooth and level, Ian slowly smiles.
Thursday
The garage door man started work, four doors , two
automatic,
His job is finished in the afternoon, and don’t they look fantastic.
The painters start the undercoat, but they went home after lunch,
The paint wont dry, the heaters are on, its coming to the crunch
.
Friday
On Friday, radio meeting night, the painting is not
finished,
Home at 11, more work to do, our resolve is undiminished.
Lift this here, move that there, don’t touch the walls , there wet,
Its two AM, I’m really tired, is it nearly bed time yet.
Saturday
Its ten o’clock, we have all slept in, there’s still
a lot to do,
Sweep the floor, arrange the tables and set up the barbecue.
I hear Helmut on the radio, already on his way here,
I haven’t done the shopping yet, I hope there’s enough beer.
Barbecue
Every one is here to enjoy themselves on this sparkling
cold Autumn day,
There’s heaps to eat, salads and meat, sausages and chicken satay.
A great big jar of M and M’s, disappearing by the minute,
I’m sure there were a lot more in there, the last time I looked
in it.
Squinting through the telescope we spied Mt Baw Baw sprinkled with
snow,
The kids start up the golf buggy and everyone has a go.
Graeme bought his Postie bike, and the big kids have a ride,
I’ll just sit down with my cup of tea, its much warmer here, inside.
