President’s Message - August 2001

Welcome to the August edition of Gateway, and it seems welcome to some cold weather. We really do need that rain don’t we!

The club should be very proud of their efforts with respect to the HAMFEST. Some $XXXX went into club funds as a result of a lot of effort by members and behalf of the club I would like to thank a few people.

Firstly to Russ VK3MWR who worked tirelessly in the promotion of our event. This is the second year that Russ has been involved and it was a fantastic effort, thanks Russ for taking the time, I know you would like a rest next year. Advertising brochures for the HAMFEST popped up in all sorts of places and that is entirely down to Russ.

To those who helped set up and dismantle, thank you. To those who produced the fantastic food on the day (Jenny, Val, Naree, Ivan and Helmut in particular) I know for a fact that nobody went hungry. To those who manned the door and collected money (Bruno, Ian VIB, Jason etc.) the whole day went very smoothly as a result of your control. To all those who had a stall I hoped you cleared some space in the shack for some more essential items! To Reg and his P.A. system, thanks for making that available. To anybody else I have forgotten to mention, well done!!

As President of the club I was very proud of the way the members of GGREC handled themselves and you are all to be commended, it made my job very, very easy! The committee, and myself, are looking to put together a package (a group of standing orders, if you like) so that whoever decides to run the show next year will have all the ground work already done. So if you have any comments / criticisms etc please let us know so that we can make sure next years event is an even better one. In particular we would like somebody to be next year’s organizer can you help?

There is a lot happening in and around the club and its all in the excellent event queue that Bruno produces so make sure you have a good look. You would not want to miss anything!

In particular the Great Australian Science Show is coming up and we are helping to man the WIA stalls so give that some thought, many hands make light work!

Once again thanks to everybody for their support, this club can only grow bigger and better with you as a member!
Cheers, Andrew

Low Loss Current Mode Balun For 1.8 –30 Mhz

By Peter Woodland VK3ZPW

This balun / choke design will give an impedance step up ratio of four times (1:-4:)

Great for feeding a ladder line to an all band antenna like a G5RV or similar.

This design is a modified version of the Guanella current mode balun that has recently been made so popular.

It will cover the whole of HF with very little loss (below my measurement capabilities) or core heating for power levels up to around 500 watts.

Fig 1 – Coax Cable Windings

Input / Output Wiring

 Fig 2 – Input / Output Wiring

Parts required are 4 High permeability manganese zinc ferrite "E" cores, 2 x 300mm lengths of 92 Ohm coaxial cable, (lan cable) and some 5 minute epoxy.

modified version of the Guanella current mode

Ferrites used are Neosid type F5

Ferrites used are Neosid type F5, Initial permeability (ui) 1600 and a saturation flux density (Bsat) of 470 Milli Tesla (mt) Part number 32-110-25

Any high permeability ferrite cores will work but there may be some trade off in certain areas of performance. Example- a pair of cores should have an effective magnetic path length of 97mm and an effective volume of 17600mm2.. to give a 500 watt rating.

Putting it together- Glue the the two halfs of the E cores together and press together firmly so that most of the glue is squeezed out of the join, let the glue dry.

Wind 5 turns of the coaxial cable though the core windows, and leave equal amounts of cable coming out. Do this on both sets of cores, strip the ends and solder as per the diagram. The link is only used to force a balance in respect to gnd but is normally not needed.

Your Own "Freshly-Squeezed" QSL Cards

By John L Wickham VK3ZK

Having been the owner of an inkjet printer for the last two months, I decided to perform a grand experiment, to see whether I could print out a QSL card onto blank card stock. The result is shown below. I wanted to do this, because I am sick and tired of having to do unsightly-looking hand-written QSL cards. I could have also tried "stick-on" labels, but I think they look a bit unsightly also.

First, using MS Word ’97, you need to go into its Page Setup under File, and select a custom size. I needed 15 x 10 cm in my case, you must also select Landscape printing for this to work. MS Word’s stupid margins system, however, would not allow me to select margins of 1 cm all around, which is why the results below look off-centre.

A sor t of template has been created by me, called QSL Blank.doc. When the time comes for a real QSL card, I load the above template, fill in the blanks and print same out on my Lexmark Z12 inkjet printer.
