Indigenous Nursery
One of the major activities of the group is to run the Dandenong Community Nursery that grows plants indigenous to the Greater Dandenong area. This is needed because:
- Plants that grow naturally in Dandenong will need less care, attention and water in your garden than plants that come from elsewhere.
- We can make our contribution to fighting the Greenhouse Effect by planting more trees in parks and schools.
- More trees means more habitat for insects and birds. They also reduce runoff into creeks and absorb nutrients that would otherwise be washed away.
- Revegetation makes our city look even better!

The nursery is based in a greenhouse at the council depot on the corner of Greaves St and Cheltenham Road. We gratefully acknowledge the support of the City of Greater Dandenong in providing us with the premises and materials, in return for which we provide them with many plants.
Working bees are held regularly at the nursery: Thursday morning, 10am -1pm, and the last Sunday in the month, 9am-12pm.
The seed for our plants has been collected within Greater Dandenong. Then our members nurture the seeds in the greenhouse into ever bigger plants until they are ready for their new home.
Some of the tasks that you can help with are:
- Sowing seeds,
- Pricking out seedlings,
- Collecting material for cuttings,
- Taking cuttings,
- Potting up cuttings,
- Potting on plants, and
- Weeding.
We welcome help from anyone who is keen to help our environment.
