History of the Greater Dandenong Environment Group

In 1990 a few people wanting to share information and to increase local awareness about environmental issues formed the Dandenong Environmental Group. They began distributing literature concerning the environment, planting trees in Tirhatuan Park and generally trying to make the environment more of an issue within our city.

In 1994 the Dandenong Environment Group expanded. It became incorporated and started the Dandenong Community Nursery, equipping it with grants from several government organisations. In 1996, following the changes to the local government boundaries, we changed our name to the Greater Dandenong Environment Group.

Over the years we have contributed to the conservation strategy, several publications on local flora and fauna, participated in local festivals, produced a leaflet on nestboxes, organised meetings, talks, walks including spotlight walks and some social events. One of the major activities of the group is to run the Dandenong Community Nursery that grows plants indigenous to the Greater Dandenong area.

Other Activities

  • Apart from our nursery, we try to have a wide range of activities for our members by co-operating with other local groups to organise nature walks, spotlight walks and ponddipping.
  • We organise tree planting days for our members and other volunteers, and try to support as many of the Council's community planting days as possible.
  • On occasion we conduct nestbox workshops where a selection of nestboxes for local species are constructed and eventually put in place.
  • We have displays at local events and hold regular meetings.
  • We affiliate to other environmental organisations and are always looking for new projects to interest our members.
