GATE : About Us
GATE Pain Management Interest Group - Victoria
GATE
Pain management Interest Group of Victoria was more than
20 years ago, to act as a support group for health
professionals interested in sharing their knowledge in
pain management.
The name 'GATE' was selected in deference to the GATE
control theory of pain proposed by Melzack and Wall in
1962, which postulates that the perception of pain is
modulated by interaction between different neurons and
not a direct result of activation of pain receptor
neurons as previously thought.
In its early stages membership of GATE was small and
aimed to provide a forum or network for those interested
in pain management. Despite its small membership it was
recognised that such an organisation could become a
valuable resource to all nurses by contributing to the
formation of up to date policies and procedures for the
management of pain.
Membership of GATE has grown and in keeping with current
trends it acknowledges the importance of promoting a
multidisciplinary approach to pain management. Membership
is therefore extended to health professionals from all
disciplines to broaden its network. Present members are
comprised of nurses and allied health professionals from
a variety of fields, including aged care, paediatrics,
intensive care, medical nursing, palliative care and
academia.
